Hi,
I am having trouble finding what i'm looking for and hoping someone can help. I am trying to create a realistic modelling clay/playdough/plasticine effect to apply to objects, but I can't find a tutorial that can help me achieve this.
Any ideas?

Just for clarity, are you looking for a material to apply to a 3D object before rendering, or an effect that can be applied to an object in a 2D image? If the latter, can you show an example image that you want to convert.

Hi Dave,
I have attached an image akin to what i'm after. This is done in Cinema 4d but didn't know if i could achieve something similar in illustrator or photoshop.

Adobe has better 3D application than Photoshop none come close to Free Blender. The are also good and expensive 3D application marketed.

Not likely that you can create the exact look. Such stuff isn't even necessarily trivial in som 3D programs due to the rounded edges requiring a specific subdivision modelling workflow and/ or smoothing/ rounding the objects with specific deformers, metaball surfaces and so on. Likewise, creating those exaggerated incidence based shaders might prove difficult. Not saying that e.g. for simple text or for that matter anything with basic extrusions it couldn't be achieved with overcranked rounded bevels, but anything beyond that will likely require you to use a genuine 3D modeling and rendering program.

Again the question is, are you looking to do that in 3D and apply a material to it in which case I would say go and use a 3D application such as Blender which will take care of the curved edges using modifiers, and give you great control over the material.
Alternatively are you just looking to paint a simulation of something like that in 2D which can be done using shapes and then clipping pixel layers to those shapes and painting in the shaded colours. Of course the 2D method cannot easily be repositioned or re-lit.
