Having an issue with the new update. Finally, I am seeing my extension name update when a new one is selected in the save as dialog box... however I am still having an issue with saving over original files. If I make changes to a file then try to save over the .png file it keeps saving as filename-copy.png. I am not able to unselect the "Save as a copy" box. Anyone else?
[subject edited for clarity]
This bug introduced by Apple with macOS Catalina has been resolved with 22.4.

Everybody!
I'm really tired of this.
Adobe won't notice a ducking thing about this issue until we will do something TOGETHER.
What about choosing a date and start contacting Adobe support for the whole day, asking them about this issue. Maybe that'll make them pay attention to this rediculuos issue?
Any better ideas?

I created a quick youtube video and posted it, hoping that someone from Adobe finally notices. Please feel free to share or repost. This issue needs to get fixed.

Also having this problem. I don't see a fix anywhere. How can an enormous bug like this persist for so long?

I do searches and check any relative forrum related to this every few months. Seems like this bug has been going on around 2 years. This really slows down workflow and is continually frustrating. It's a big step back from prior efficiency. #@^%&$¶•!!

It's a possibility it's solely a compatibility issue between Catalina and Adobe, but part of me also believes that it was purposefully done, just based on some of the responses that I've seen to this issue (namely the ones that say "but it just makes sense to save jpgs/pngs as a copy"... no, no it doesn't...). I just can't understand how it's been going on for so long with so many complaints. Seems like a relatively straightforward thing to fix and something that shouldn't have been changed to begin with. Does Adobe just not care about user satisfaction anymore?

Here's the only solution I was able to use as a work around: Go to Photoshop, Prefrences, Export...
Change your Quick Export Format to JPEG. Now, everytime you want to save your file, instead of going to "Save As..." You go down to "Export", then "Quick Export as a JPEG" and it will overwrite.
It's one little extra menu hop, but definitely much quicker than having to rename files all the time. Hope this helps!

Thanks sdemi813, it is a good solution, I have tried to do it as you say and it effectively overwrites the file instead of creating a copy. Good job!!!

I am having the same issue. I can get around it by changing my quick export settings to JPG @ 100% quality and doing a quick export instead of a save, but i'd like to see this resolved.

Same. JPGs don't overwrite but create a copy. Never used to be this way and wreaks havoc on our workflow. It started in September of 2019 with the Catilina update. I opened a case with Adobe at that time, which they left open for a month and kept telling me they were aware of it and working on a fix. Finally got an email saying it was fixed; except...it wasn't. I've reopened the case several times since and they still claimed it has been fixed and I should dump my Prefs (doesn't work). Fast forward one year (Sept 15, 2020). I just ran the newest PS update 21.2.3 on Mac OS 10.15.6, praying it was fixed, but NO. What in the actual heck, Adobe?!?! With hundreds of complaints across multiple forums, HOW IS THIS NOT RESOLVED YET?

Just adding up to the hate train... usually I don't agree that's the way to go to motivate people but at this point we are just being trolled.
Over one year of all the millions users paying their yearly subscription like a good citizen and this is still on-going. Can't believe that there were not enough resources or reasons to fix something that wasn't even broken ever in the last 10 years... the dialog pop-up ASKS for Replacing the file, we click on the replace button, it says nothing about it, it just 'saves', but navigate to the target folder and it has a 'copy' added to it.
The contract is both ways, users pay, the software works or gets fixed in a reasonable amount of time.
The community guidelines do say to be respectful and kind so I'll eat my words, however this treatment is neither respectful nor kind from the other part. Having a community manager asking over and over again about how to reproduce and not fixing it for the next full year is not kind.
This is all in your detriment, when people asks "should I get Photoshop or the Affinity suite (for a fraction of the price)" they won't go and say "oh, get Photoshop, they have their issues like any software but the community forum is SO ACTIVE! I LOVE IT!".
rant over, this shouldn't be an issue to begin with, this doesn't need to get on a release.

I found this on another thread and it worked for me!
1) Close all Adobe related processes in activity monitor (Creative cloud, Core sync, CC library, services for adobe desktop app, adobe desktop service, Adobe IPC broker, AAM updater)
2) Navigate to following locations and assign the current user full permissions to adobe folders. To navigate click go from menu bar at then click goto.. type /Library/application support/ and click go.
3) To assign the permission right click on adobe folder and click Get info.. A property window will open. Then click on lock symbol to enable editing. Then click + sign to add your username. Then change read only to read and write. Then click gear symbol at the bottom and click apply to enclosed items and click ok.

Adding to this. Been maddenning, adding unneccessary and unwarranted clutter to my drives, naming conventions and workflow. Fix this.
It has nothing to do with what is or isnt supported by the final output be it jpg, png or whatever. I make a jpg, make a tiny edit like fixing a hairline or something choose save as, get the warning that theres an older filke with the same name and it'll replace that older file, I click "replace" but can see that save a copy is check marked and greyed out and the little warning icon is visible (neither of which were the case before I chose replace) so photoshop saves a copy. [cursing removed]. Why ask me if I want to replace/overwrite a file if you aren't going to let me do so? No one needs this headache. Now I have an additional task in monitoring studio output. Thanks for nothing Adobe.
The scale tool change was bad enough but easy to fix. This is a problem and its costing time. Time is money. Also, fix share review to make it like Indesign and acrobat. If I wanted to email these I'd email them. I want to share an image file on the cloud for review. Do you have any concept how limited email is in regards to file size?

I have the same problem. Now on Mac OS 10.15.7 Photoshop V 22.0.0. Still the same.
Flattening the file is not the correct answer as pointed out in the 'correct answer' link?? As everybody has said, despite saying yes to overwrite existing jpg it still saves a copy. You then have to navigate to files and delete/rename. It causes issues with potentially sending an old version to clients etc.
Until Adobe sort this, one work around I've used (and we shouldn't using work arounds anyway!) make your layered files an artboard (naming your artboard with the desired file name). The layers still work the same. Then you can export the artboard as a jpg from the layer palette options instead of 'save as'. When you come back to make changes and export again to jpg, it will save over the previous version. Less annoying than renaming/deleting files etc each time you make changes. But it still needs sorting! Saving over a file is such a basic function of any software!?

Same issue. It happened after I (finally) updated to Catalina and Photoshop 2021. This is really destroying my workflow. Adobe get it together!!!!
