saving files in photoshop, WHY THE EXTRA STEPS??

Participant ,

Apparently I'm not seeing the reason for this change, but when saving a new document and/or saving as, a document, why do we now have to take an extra step for something that was so easy to begin with? The only reason I can think of, is adobe developers are bored and can't come up with any new and BETTER ideas. Stop making the simplicity of widely used functions more complicated!

Can someone please point out the reason for this added pain in the butt step??

Save a Copy was introduced to save overwriting an image, you can revert to the previous method via Photoshop preferences. This excellent YouTube tutorial explains the various ways of saving and exporting Photoshop documents: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5CS_oieQL7c&t=26s

First of all, if the document already satisfies the jpeg file format specification, then jpeg will appear directly under Save As. It goes to Save A Copy only when data have to be discarded to save to the target format.

This was originally done to work around a change in the save protocol in MacOS. Later Adobe were able to find their own workaround, so that you can now revert to the old behavior in Preferences:

Just for context, Photoshop CS5 was the first version where you could save directly to jpeg from a layered/16 bit/transparent original. In CS4 and earlier, saving to jpeg wouldn't be possible at all, until the file was flattened, reduced to 8 bit depth, and transparency and alpha channels were removed - in other words, until it complied with the jpeg specification. Then you could save. Memory is short.

It just harder to configure Photoshop to work normally these days.  Adobe keeps changing the way Photoshop works and adding new features and bugs.  You need to be able to work around Adobe Changes and bugs.  Adobe also removes Photoshop feature.  Not all Photoshop Features in Photoshop are implemented well IMO  There are Features in Photoshop the should be removed like Tool recording and the Frame Tool,  the Freeform Pent tool,  I also feel Adobe should fix some of te reported bugs they have in Photoshop.  Like bugs in Photoshop  Scripting and bugs in Adobe Adjustment  Panel.   All users can do it give Adobe feedback point to problem areas show Adobe their Bugs and pray Adobe will address these.  Photoshop is becoming Harder to install and configure  to work well. Some of the bugs in Photoshop are over ten years old. Bugs in CS2 are still in Photoshop 2022. Adobe's need to address Photoshop support  Photoshop Updated always seem to have new bugs.  What is Adobe going to brake in its next Photoshop update.
