why in the heck are you making it to be a jpg copy when saving a psd? this is rediculous. stupid actually.
Here is the reason why:

That being said, the newest update 22.4.2 allows you to use legacy save functions to go back to the way it was on Windows.

I still don't understand. If there are things like hidden pixels or what not, shouldn't flattening it and saving it as a JPG dump all that? Why must we now do more clicks to save as JPG (now as a copy). That's what saving as JPG always was.. with less clicks.

You can revert (via Photoshop preferences) to the old method of saving, if you prefer.

The point everybody keeps missing in all this, is that if the file already conforms to the jpeg specification, then it will be available under Save As, like any other format. Save A Copy only enters the picture when data have to be discarded. That's why it's a copy.
There's been a lot of noise about this, even to the point where Adobe was forced to backtrack and add an option to revert to old behavior. But there is a logic here, and Save A Copy makes that logic very clear and transparent.
A surprisingly high number of people aren't aware of the limitations of the jpeg file format. They don't understand why the file no longer has layers or transparency or 16 bit depth etc. Save A Copy is a way to avoid all those "Adobe ruined my work".

Exactly Dag – some people seem to lead off before reading the earlier post in the thread that try and explain the reason for the change.

Since 22.4, if your file contains items that are not supported in your required format (e.g. layers or 16 bits/channel or hidden pixels etc) then the file format is moved from Save As (Shift+Ctrl+S) to the Save a Copy command (Alt+Ctrl+S). This was driven by changes in the Mac Operating System, although the changes are applied to both Mac and Windows versions to keep them aligned.
In 22.4.2 two new options were added to Preferences > File Handling.
The first allows you to revert to the legacy Save As workflow and the second to optionally omit the word "copy" from the filename when using Save a Copy
