Selection from multiple paths not working

I'm following a tutorial on using paths to make multiple selections. I followed the instructions but when I select Make Selection in the Path Menu it only converts the last path I made. I'm not sure why this is.

This is the only subpathItem which is 'active'.

What happens if you [Strg]+click on the miniatur in the Path Palette?

I'm not sure what strg is? But I hit shift+click and that worked. Thank you

One note:
