Separate paths/shapes in different shape layers

Community Beginner ,
Oct 18, 2020 Oct 18, 2020

I accidentally drawn using pen tool some shapes on a single layer and i want those shapes to be on separate layers to apply each one a different color/ modify transparency. Please help, thanks.

In first capture you can see all those shapes on Layer 6.(actually paths, because I can't apply them a color, I don't know why, because when I select Pen Tool, "Shape" is selected)

In second Capture you can see what I want, to separate each of those shapes in different layers like Layer 5 with that tiny shape (one layer, one shape).

If I understood correctly, then perhaps duplicating the shape layer and removing unnecessary subpaths in each copy of the layer will help.

Use the path selection tool (black Arrow) to select each sub path path in turn and Press Ctrl+J

Repeat for the other subpaths

Select your path using the Path Selection Tool and check the options running along the top of Photoshop. Review the Path Operations options and set it to Combine Shapes.

Based off of what the OP actually asked for, your response is THE answer. This still works in 2024, this worked for me, thanks!

Copy path to own layer
If you have multiple paths within a single shape layer and you want to COPY one of those paths to its own layer, select that path with the Path Selection Tool (black arrow with the keyboard shortcut of A)...
Layer > New > Shape Layer Via Copy (Command/Control + J)

Move path to own layer
If you have multiple paths within a single shape layer and you want to MOVE one of those paths to its own layer, select that path with the Path Selection Tool...
Layer > New > Shape Layer Via Cut (Command/Control + Shift + J)

Combine vector shapes on different layers
Select the layers within the Layers panel. Select contiguous layers with the Shift key and discontiguous layers with the Command/Control key.
Layer > Merge Shapes (Command/Control + E)
