Shift+Brush Tool Not Creating Straight Lines [Mojave & Wacom]

New Here ,
Jun 07, 2019 Jun 07, 2019

Yesterday I updated my computer's os to Mojave v. 10.14.5 and had some issues with my tablet connecting. This has since been resolved, but now I'm having some issues in photoshop vis-a-vis drawing straight lines.

I can hold down shift and create straight lines using my laptop's trackpad, but I cannot do the same with my tablet. This includes drawing a line between two points while holding shift in addition to holding down shift to draw a straight line at a 90-degree angle.

I've already reset the tool preferences of my brush, reset all tool preferences, and reset all preferences in photoshop as a whole. None of these have corrected the problem.

Thank you for your help!

Additional information; I use...

  • A MacBook Air running macOS Mojave v. 10.14.5
  • A Wacom Intuos Pro PTH-660
  • Photoshop CC 20.0.4 release

I missed the fact the you were using a Mac.  I aslo do not know  what kind of tablet you use.  I use a Wacom tablet.  I woul not thiny the problem you have would be a Tablet Problem. However Photoshop 1s working corectle with your other input devices Mouse and TrackPad.  So there is a possibility it is Tablet related. In the Past I have had strange issues with My Wacom Tablet.  Every preference I change to try to fix my issues did not help.   However when I trashed Wacom Preferences.  Then creat

I looks like you are using a wet mixer brush with some brush dynamics set to pen pressure. Even with a normal round tip set to hard 10 pixel size. I find it hard just to single tap the  pen tip the to my tablet so O wind up with a line the same for Shift Pen click.  You can some if thes little stroke in this screen capture,  If looks better than you wet brush usage they  look like pen strokes not Shift clicks.

However if you are holding the shift key you strokes should be straight lines like below. I can never control them the seem constrained tp +-0, +-45, +-90.

So I use my mouse where I have better Click control

Thank you for your reply, JJMack!

I already have this function working with my trackpad, but it's not what I'm looking to restore.

I'm looking to use the function that's demonstrated in this video, drawing a perfectly straight horizontal or vertical line with the brush tool. Previously I was able to hold down the shift key while dragging my brush in a brush stroke and create said perfectly straight horizontal or vertical line. Presently, this function is not working.

Are you using a PC or a Mac. That is how my Windows 10, Photoshop  CC 2019 works with my Wacom Intuos Pro Pen with a wet Paint brush. I do get some poor sart  and end line areas because of my slow reflexes pressing and releasing the shift key. The edges of the stroke seem soft because of the mixing effect. If your Pen does not work that way I would suggest Resetting your Photoshop Tools, Then trash you Pen Preferences  and create new pen preferences for Photoshop. If that does not fix your problem. Try resetting your Photoshop Preferences.

Trevor.Dennis thank you so much for your reply! And for adding that additional tag, that's very helpful.

Unfortunately, I didn't find anything in the link you provided pertaining to my issue. Thank you all the same for including the link.

Hi again JJMack! As stated in my first post:

I've already reset the tool preferences of my brush, reset all tool preferences, and reset all preferences in photoshop as a whole. None of these have corrected the problem.

These solutions have been offered on other forum messages and I already attempted them. I have also already stated that I am using a MacBook Air, and the OS that I'm running on it.

I would love to hear any further suggestions you have, JJ. Thank you so much for your replies!

Hi again JJMack!

I state all the tools I'm using (including my tablet) in my original post. It's actually right under where I say I'm using a mac - which means I probably should have stated that information first so it wouldn't be missed. My bad!

I have also communicated that I have reset my tool preferences and my photoshop preferences as a whole. Just to make sure though, here are the steps I've taken previously!

I have reset my tool by selecting this option:

reset tool[[[].png

I have reset all my tools by selecting this option:

reset all tools.jpg

And I have reset my photoshop preferences by selecting this option:

I do apologize, I should have included these images in my original post! Is there another way for me to reset my preferences? Or has this been done correctly?

Thank you for suggesting I speak with Wacom support. I'll give that a try, too!

Same issue for me too on my Wacom cintiq 16. I can no longer use the brush tool and the shift key to draw straight lines in PS. The mouse does it fine though but that's not the point...
