Slider crashes and graphic artifact glitches - HELP!

Hello all,

Photoshop has been running beautifully for months on my new PC. Then maybe 3 weeks ago, it started having issues. Two specific ones that I wouldn't expect to encounter on a machine of this spec.

When clicking and dragging sliders (e.g. brightness/contrast, hue/saturation) - especially with a sudden, fast movement, Photoshop will freeze and crash.

In addition, these strange rectangular stripe marks randomly appear on my image within Photoshop. They seem to be something to do with using layers and transparency - often clicking the visibility of a layer on or off might make one appear. They're not just a visual glitch on the screen either - if you save the file (or a copy of it), it'll save the glitch too. I first noticed this when somebody at work spotted one in a brochure I'd PDF'd from InDesign. Examples attached: I screenshotted these just before.

I'm baffled and very frustrated, especially as being able to run Photoshop smoothly was the main reason I finally upgraded to a brand new system this year (it was totally strugglng on my old PC!).

I'm no real techspert, but it feels like these issues are in some way GPU-related/performance-related. Indeed, I have a powerful graphics card that idles on a few percent usage, yet I've tested things with Task Manager open and the Photoshop slider crash coincides (or causes?) the GPU to max out off the chart.

Why all of a sudden though? This computer has been running perfectly for months. Was it a Windows update or Photoshop (or other Adobe) update that changed something?

In terms of troubleshooting, I've tried both enabling and disabling the graphics processor in Photoshop's preferences, which seems to make no difference. I've also installed the latest NVIDIA drivers, which was the first time I've done this since new. Doesn't seem to have changed anything either.

Any thoughts, suggestions or solutions would be magic and very much appreciated.

Try enabling this option in preferencs and restarting Photoshop to see if it helps

I have tried this one, sadly, and yes, still no change.

Aside from possible Adobe or Windows updates, the only thing software/hardware change I can think of that may coincide with these issues starting is that I finally located a missing USB adapter so that my son could plug his Razer gaming heaphones/mic set in to talk to people in games. I've noticed that whatever drivers come with this feature a CPU-intensive THX component which still runs even if the headphones aren't plugged into the adapter. I wonder if that might be affecting the graphics card? Son says that Fortnite and Minecraft are crashing a LOT too. More than usual.

I do also have the Razer Synapse app installed for controlling the PC case lighting too, but that's been there since Day 1 and had never caused any issues previously. Maybe I'll attempt to uninstall anything related to the headphones and see if that makes any difference. I'll keep you posted here.

In the meantime, if any other ideas related to Photoshop settings (or GPU settings as they relate to Photoshop) spring to mind, please do type away!

I'm not seeing any submitted crash reports from you in our system.

I definitely haven't been seeing the crash report dialog, so just followed the command prompt advice above to allegedly get that happening. 

I've since managed to crash Photoshop twice though, and both times it froze momentarily then sucked itself into nowhere and was no longer open. Neither occasion brought up the crash report prompt. Are Photoshop's crash logs automatically stored somewhere regardless of the prompt window, do you know? If so, I could manually gather them and throw them your way.

I did also manage to get this Task Manager snap after Photoshop shut down just before. See the crazy GPU spike that coincides with that exact moment? Hmm.

Did a reboot, just in case, and same spikey death.

Took a fair bit of mad slider action to kill it this time, actually. But again, no crash report prompt.

Okay, more reboots and another crash while opening Photoshop this time. It did bring up a dialog box but that itself was frozen and I couldn't type, select anything or submit with it.

In other news, Photoshop 23.0.0 seems to have installed itself. I've also done a repair on the Razer Synapse install as a first test (uninstalling and reinstalling will I guess be the next mission there).

Let's see how we go now.

Nope, dead again. Time to uninstall Razer Synapse completely and see how Photoshop works then.

Okay, no Razer software at all installed now.

Photoshop 23.0.0 died again instantly with one swipe of the hue/saturation slider. No error dialog box.

GPU peaked with the crash. And also when I closed Photoshop normally just before too.

I currently have the GPU enabled within Photoshop. Let's try turning that off.

Nope, still no good. 

I've updated to the very latest NVIDIA studio drivers too with a clean install. 

PS still dies randomly while using the sliders.

It actually let me submit a crash report for the first time. This was on PS startup however. 

Also adjusted GPU power limit using MSI as detailed here, just for something to try. No change.
