Slow computer

My computer slowed down to the point of taking it to the shop.  There we found that Photoshop is taking up so much memory, it is the cause.  I had another memory stick installed and even after that, it is slowing down after being open for awhile.  I hate having to shut everything down and reboot but it is the only way to get my speed back.

Anybody else run into this problem?  Can anything be done?

Also, there's a more subtle disadvantage with using integrated graphics: they use system memory. A discrete GPU doesn't do that; it has its own dedicated onboard memory.

A GPU can potentially eat up a lot of memory. There's a timing factor here: Photoshop tends to allocate large amounts of memory quickly, while the GPU will need it gradually as you work. But by then there may be nothing left.

Make sure you're not setting Photoshop's memory usage too high in Preferences. It should be around 6

First noticable issue is driver date, it is outdated (30 months) Try to update driver before anything else.

I see a choice of drivers.  Don't won't to choose the wrong one.

NVIDIA DRIVERS: Nvidia provides a choice between Studio and Game-ready drivers. Preferably, you should use Studio drivers

  • AMD DRIVERS
  • INTEL DRIVERS

You need a driver for the GPU you actually have: Intel UHD 630. Go to Intel's site and check there.

You don't have a Nvidia or AMD GPU, so those are moot.

Make sure you're not setting Photoshop's memory usage too high in Preferences. It should be around 60 - 70%, not higher.

I also suggest you monitor memory usage closely. As you can see here, the GPU can use a lot. Here it uses almost 10 GB VRAM, in addition to the 25 GB system RAM already in use.

I did all the suggested things, including updating my driver.  It seems better so far, I hope it stays that way.

Thank you.

If anybody is still out there, my latest update is this:

Same old thing. Whenever I turn on my computer, it operates fast and I am satisfied.  Then after being open for awhile, it gets slower and slower to the point that I have to shut down or re-boot.  Is there no way to find out what is causing this?  I am pretty sure it's caused by Photoshop.

Question:  Remind me again, should I click on Use Graphics Processor or not?

You have low amount of memory, only 12GB from what I can see, only OS will eat around 5GB. Its not miracle that you have problem as you are proceeding with editing, lot of layers, lot of open documents or big document with single Smart Object can cause operations to be slow like painting, filters and so on... At some point of time you may see delay while moving cursor from position to another. Turn on Use GPU if Photoshop detects any.

Thank you.  It is true I do open lots of windows, use lots of layers and open lots of images,, etc  but I have always done that with no problem until now.  I thought my memory was okay since I just had another memory stick installed.  I will just continue to re-boot when necessary.

This thread is marked as solved  but it is not solved.  Here is an update:

UPDATE:  I did an experiment to help me find out why my computer slows down to the point of being useless.

Wasn't sure if it was the computer, Windows 10 or Photoshop causing this.  So as much as I use Photoshop, I turned it off for a whole week and I have had no SLOW problems whatsoever!

So it is definitely Photoshop.

Can you tell me anythng I can do with Photoshop to stop this?  Are there any files may be hidden that I can delete?  I have checked and I do have the right requirements for running Photoshop so it's not that.  So what can it be? I will soon be pulling out my hair. I am going to try and contact Adobe if there is no answer for this here.
