Hello,

So I want to rename the camera RAW file that is inside a smart object. I have been told that the way to do this is to right-click and either "export contents"/"convert' to linked followed by "replace contents".

This seems fairly straight foward in theory, however the resulting dng or psb files dont have the changes I have made. could someone please help. thanks

p.s I have made the sky red with dark paintbrush for an example

It worked for me (export contents with new name, replace contents, no need to change embedded to linked) – as in the embedded filename changed.

Please list exactly step-by-step the order of operations. Make note of where files are opened from, where they are saved to etc.

The edits would be stored in an .xmp sidecar file for a non-dng raw file, so if the name of the raw file changed you would also need to rename the sidecar to match.

EDIT: It appears to be a little harder than that! DNG works as the Camera Raw Settings are embedded in the file without sidecar related issues.

thanks for the reply.  1st--What I have done is make several adjustments in Lightroom (eg. creative sharpening, extra defringing etc. etc.) THEN 2nd--Right click "open as smart object in PS". 3rd. Made more layers in PS for all sorts of editing eg. cloning out stuff etc. NOW there are 2 issues-- one is that the name of the raw file in the smart object is out-of-date and significantly different to the relevant RAW file in LR, so It needs to be changed. The 2nd is that Im not sure if I made minor changes to the adjustment brushes for the smart object in Photoshop, so I cant just re-export the raw file from LR and reposition it in the same place in PS.

The attached picture is me trying to "export contents" -saved as "help.dng" which you can se at the bottom of the picture did not include the adjustment brushes of the red sky and dark writing

if its edited in PS as a NON-linked smart object then (it should be) it is independent of the RAW file (which was processed in LR)
