Thanks to all those who took part our last "Repair Shop" challenge. This week, we have something different.
There has been a lot of shielding going on around the world over the past year so I wondered what the Photoshop community would make with an actual shield.
I made this shield as an exercise in creating an "object" entirely as a material, using Adobe's 3D Substance Designer. So it is all procedural, stringing together 3D Designer's nodes, and no modelling was involved at all. I then rendered the material on a flat, square, plane in Blender 3D, using the material's height map to displace the surface and give it depth.
Now you have the shield, what can you do with it?
The “rules”:
* Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc
* Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum "regulars".
* There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!
To download the image below at its full pixel size, and with an embedded ICC colour profile (sRGB), hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).
When posting back your image – please use the Blue reply button in this first post. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.
Have fun.

Excellent Rayek. Keeping the pallete colours in line with the painting is a great detail 🙂

I was taught to always go one step further than the obvious! The devil is in the details 😉
Transform shield + color blend mode for a quick and dirty job.
And thanks for these weekly fun challenges. They are at times a nice distraction from real work.

Amen to that. It's the added detail that n=makes these images more interesting.

What I noticed first was Bob's angry face and the bloody slash across his left eye! I thought he always exuded calmness, but maybe this face is a reaction to all that's been brought to light in the new movie Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed?

It's the facial expression gone viral from the film 300 (of which I used an image of one of the classis scenes for the "painting"). Not very original on my side, because it has already been heavily abused in similar memes. But I found it quite funny to re-use it for this challenge.

Where there's families and boatloads of money involved, it seems that is more often than not the sad case.
There's a funny one with Han Solo as well (Google Bob Ross Millenium Falcon). 🙂

Watched the movie last night, heartbreaking to say the least, we get to see the Joy of Painting on BBC4 during the week and it's always a joy to watch, didn't release what was going on in the background

When you do, we can point you in the right direction of a garage with a lift, plus all the tools you might need, Dave. 😊

Great to see you having a go JJ. You definitely do a great chrome effect and I love that you have kept the detail on top of the chrome. Was that done with blend modes, or by magic and mirrors?

Its simply a layer style I download from the web some twenty years ago, When you scale the layer style you can get may chrome effects you can also edit and change color overlay etc. I created 4 shape layers and styled them. The Layer Pixels and color does not matter. I can even set the Layer pixels fill to 0.
Add center Disk shape 5
I do not know who created that Layer Style I found it around 2000 to 2004 and downloaded an had fun playing with scaling and tweaking it once added.

That's a nice job with the additional runes Jacob. They fit in well.
But Destruction, Trust, Wealth and Chaos... I'm not sure which organisation that represents, but I could take a guess 🙂

Hmm, not sure if you're having some fun here 🙂
The line from the movie is: "They may take our lives but they'll never take our freedom!"
However did you know that in the Uk, a slang term for ones wife where
she has you tied down and subservient is "the ball and chain" !!

Great use of the shield Euan. I wonder if Wallace actually looked like Mel Gibson 🙂
