Hi,
Thanks to all who took part in our Christmas tree decorating challenge. This week, we have something a little different. I give you three musical notes. A musician might put them on a stave and play them, but what can you create with them? Will it be "A Sharp" way to show your skills or will it "B Flat" ? Whether your skills are "Major" or "Minor" - come and join in.
The “rules”:
* Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc
* Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum "regulars".
* There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!
To download the image below which has the notes against a transparent background, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).
When posting back your image – please use the blue reply button in this first post. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.
Have fun
Dave

I've already watched this a dozen times, Jain — it's wonderful!

What! Oh, you are too kind, Jane. Thank you for saying so. I had a lot of fun, and it sort of took on its own art direction at the end. If only I had all weekend to work on these, lol! Here I was, thinking it wasn't too good, and now I'm really happy!!

Dave, thank you for saying so!! It really means a lot as I have never made these before SFTW.

Oh, no, Ged! But being from Missouri ( the "Show Me" state), I immediately asked Siri to give me a challenge instead of a joke about music. Here is her response:

Ah! It's the one thing I can play on bagpipes !!
I learnt it by ear and don't read music 🙂

Euan, in the rebus I had wrongly relied on everyone having seen and remembering the Skyescape from SFTW105 to go with the boat from SFTW71 (the mast originating in SFTW34, my first) at the centre of the singing and piping.

Ah, thank you Jacob, I went back and saw your inspiration 🙂
In return I give you Jessie Rae, a modern twist about crossing the sea, but still very Scottish !!

Now that is really different in every way (apart from the westward crossing), Euan, including the safe return over the (much wider) water.

"Note Progression"
(I kind of cheated on this. It was just easier to whip up something in Finale and bring an exported PDF into Photoshop. The sentiment is still there, of course.) 🙂

James, I went to the trouble of installing Playscore 2 on my phone so I could scan and listen to your score. It sounded OK — in a rather computer generated way — but I am still none the wiser.

Heh, yeah, it was just a basic C Major progression I pulled out of my head really quickly. Nothing special.

That is original use of the starting image James ! 🙂
Starting with the three note lengths and developing a musical progression from there. I think this is the first time we have seen a piece of music composed for SFTW 🙂

When there is an actual starter image, the exceptions being SFTW53 (the birthday cake) and 150 (CL) which were concepts, it can sometimes be seen more as a concept and treated more loosely, especially in cases like this.
This has made me realize that I am ridiculously often inclined to keep very close to the actual starter image, and to enjoy the challenge of restricting the way of changing parts of it by mostly/only using parts of itself.
In this case, on the golf singing course, the hole is made from the inner rim of the minim notehead, and the flag is simply the upper part of the quaver.
And all the singing on Skye is made from the actual minim, crotchet, and quaver, with some transformations and addition of a custom stave and other bits, all made as a drawing rather than using a sheet application; (like Jane?) I had to reverse the flag on the quaver with the stem facing down. As shown below, to start with, I made it at twice the length to reach the high note, which I believed would be enough in itself to recognize for anyone that has ever heard it, and then I masked out the latter half relying on the rebus support, ready to post it in its entirety if needed.
How are yous inclined?
