Something for the Weekend - Part 174 - Spooky Night!

Hi

Thanks to all who took part in the last challenge based on Ged's excellent rendering, there were some great ideas and images.

This weekend, with the end of October coming up, we have something a little different. Rather than a starter scene, the challenge is to create a Halloween based image in whatever format you like, but it should incorporate the text below somewhere within it.

The “rules”:

* Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc

* Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum "regulars".

* There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!

* The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only.

To download the image below with transparency, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).

When posting back your image – please use the blue reply button in this first post. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.

Have fun

Dave

Ha, exactly, Dave! I used the Colorize Neural Filter with a few adjustments after. I think it looks pretty good.

There is always a lively discussion around Halloween's origins. Some believe All Hallows’ Eve started in the Catholic Church, and others say it's a pagan or secular tradition from Ireland. All Hallows' Day (also called All Saints' Day or All Martyrs' Day) was established by Pope Boniface IV in A.D. 609, and is celebrated on November 1 each year. The evening before is the vigil. In any event, Pope Boniface consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Virgin Mary and all the Martyrs, so it's the place to be on Halloween, no doubt!

Well this was my Halloween on Behance.... I did a step by step tutorial on how to create a Frankenstein's Monster... or FrankenKenn's Monster.

Blimey Ken. That's three and a half hours.  You need one of these (mine's a chock ice)

image.png

I saw that you saved it as Ken Monster @30:40.  It's handy having a name like that with the stuff that you draw. 😉 It's beautiful work though, and I love that sort of crisp clean linework.  I also love that Leslie was the first person to state her approval, as she is no mean illustrator herself.    I promise to watch your entire video some time soon Ken, and thanks for joining in on Dave's SFTW.

Every Sunday since November 2020... been streaming for about 3 to 5 hours.

Needless to say there are a lot of tutorials. The fun thing is I now have 3 admins/mods that join me every Sunday to keep the chat box flowing. It is such fun community. 😉

I love connecting with other creatives. I used to curate the Wacom gallery on Behance from 2014 to 2020... sadly it does not exist any more.

All very cool, and I love that you are dedicating so much time to other creatives.  Silvia  should be giving you a Gold Star!  I think it was Bert Monroy that I first saw stroking workpaths in Photoshop to give you that ultra clean, and editable line art. Simulate pressure is what makes it so powerful.  Plus we have symmetry now — would you use Symmetry for your monster faces? (I have not watched the entire video yet)   I am very weak with Illustrator, but I can see how it would be more powerful than Photoshop for doing this.  There's never enough time.

I was looking at the eyeball and thinking of Eye Candy 7 which has a blood vessel preset, but it will only radiate out from the layer's content rather than in, so you'd have to manually flip individual branches.

Hi guys

All are welcome to take part in our SFTW challenges, but please do the actual challenge which, this week, was to "create a Halloween based image in whatever format you like, but it should incorporate the text below somewhere within it."  The text below being, the Halloween text from the first post 🙂

Thanks to all who completed it in full, there is still time for more before the next challenge starts on Friday.

Dave, thank you for providing us with 174 starter images since you began this photo challenge in January 2018. As you said, the challenge part is for us to take your starter image and do something with it. Sometimes I think of something right away and sometimes it takes longer, but it's always fun to figure something out, and I love to see how others have used the same image in so many different and clever ways!

When a couple of posts came in this "weekend" without the starter image, I found myself first: examining the image closely, thinking it must be there. And second: thinking about how to incorporate it to meet the challenge. Each time I found a way.

To those who may not have understood the challenge: folks often post a "redo" in Dave's photo challenges after comments. It would be fun to see you add the starter image to your lovely artwork and repost!
