Something for the weekend - Part 177 - Log in!

Thanks to everyone who took part in our last park bench challenge.

Regulars will know that sometimes we start with a scene and sometimes an object. This week we have the latter, in the form of a Yule-tide log. What can you make with it?

The “rules”:

* Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc

* Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum "regulars".

* There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!

* The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only.

To download the image below, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right.  Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser). I've given you a head start by providing it in PNG format with transparency.

When posting back your image – please use the blue reply button in this first post. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.

Well done for getting in first Dean, and for using a previous SFTW start image 🙂 I would not have liked to have been near the waterfall when that log came over though.

Haha - the scream has featured a few times in SFTW - but that is the first time I've seen it in a tree 🙂

Is there a method of boxing the ellipse at the left end of the log to get the perspective somewhere close to correct?  

OK, I have tried starting with a circle, making it a Smart Object, and fitting it to the ellipse as best I can, but that looks wrong to me.  The lower horizontal is longer than the upper horizontal, and it should be the other way round.  The verticals could maybe work, but if there is a trick to doing this properly, I would love to know it.

I wonder if you are being thrown by assuming the end of the log is circular? It isn't.

Before seeing the render, my first thought was what Dave said, and then which angle(s) the woodman did his worst at; I believe a non circular trunk and cut at (a) skew angle(s) can lead to a wide range of interpreations of the actual log, and beyond that the trunk can be bent and have a quite different shape.

Thanks Dave. I'm not sure what sound the logs would make and how long you could drum on the logs without your hands getting sore 🙂

A tradidional log drum is played with sticks on the long side. Don't  know if the tone of your version would be the same.
