Something for the Weekend - Part 192 - Get a grip!

  • July 7, 2023

This weekend's start image is brought to us by community expert @jane-e
Jane took this picture whilst visiting the Audubon State Historic Site in St. Francisville, Louisiana. It is a metalwork vice (or should I spell that vise for our friends in the US) and our challenge is to use it in the creation of a new image.

The “rules”:

* Use the starter image as at least part of your own image entry.

* Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc

* Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum "regulars".

* There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!

* The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only. Sorry to emphasise this, but the image is not for use elsewhere.

To download the image below, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right.

Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).

When posting back your image – please use the blue reply button in this first post. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.

Have fun.

Dave

Welcome PedroMacro , that's a nice result 🙂 Sorry I missed this reply when you posted it, I was away at the time.

Our 14-day weekend is drawing to a close...

Thank you to Dave for allowing my vise (vice) picture to be used in this challenge — it's been fun to see so much creativity from this group with my own image! Here's the blacksmith forging a metal "something" for us. First he heats it in the coals, then he beats it into shape.

Thank you very much for sharing, Jane.

I believe this was taken after the starter image, or someone would have cleared the bench for it.

The starter image was the last taken Jacob; this one was fourth. Nothing on the ledge was touched or moved during the demo. The image on the far right in the first row that I called "something" is a duplicate of what he made in the demo.

Now I'm burning with curiosity about the meaning of "More" on that script!

This is just a step away from making plates to print your own money! 😉

The embosed effect is excellent Dave.  They loos so lifelike and have a real depth. Even the smooth area looks like real metal.

It is also an anvil

It's not an anvil, but I suspect there could be a mischevious, skinny, long-eared coyote underneath this.

It's in a desert, so it might be a mirage.   As I am looking at it, the scale keeps changing.  It;s going from what you'd expect a vise to look like, but then it kind of morphs into a GIANT vise.  Something to do with the low camera angle and how it interacts with the horizon perhaps.  Or it might just be me. 😞   It's very effective, and an excellent fit Myra.

I am trying to think how to do a mirage effect with Photoshop.

I was going for a Wile E. Coyote scene. The background was Generative Fill. I tried some other variations, but I thought this one looked as if it had be dropped--thus creating a slight crater. 🙂

@Erin W-C. I'm not sure why you marked two of the many replies in this thread as the correct answer. There is no correct answer to this open participation thread. I have unmarked them.

@Erin W-C. No problem Erin - I just wanted to make sure the thread remained open for others who might want to participate 🙂

Just where did this workshop get its safety certification? Won it in a raffle?

There - fixed it for you.

It's always the same with those signs. The most important gets forgotten:

This particular Wilton vise was once in use at the Correct Manufacturing Company in Fallston, Pennsylvania, as seen in this photograph dated 1940.

Yes, it's fascinating to see these hard-working blokes on their lunchy 80 years ago.

Down by the lumber yard work is finished and soft amiable calls of goodnight echo round the house.

Best regards, Euan.
