Something for the Weekend - Part 233 - The Vital Spark!

Community Expert ,
Jan 31, 2025 Jan 31, 2025

Hi,
There were some great entries to our Fulling Mill challenge, thanks to everyone who took the time to create and post them.

This week we start with an object, and an apology to writer Neil Munro for using his puffer steamboat's title this week. Those familiar with petrol (gasoline) engines will recognise the object as a spark plug. Those with electric or diesel engines will have to use your imagination. So we have our starting object, what can you turn it into?

The “rules”:

  • Use the starter image as at least part of your own image entry.
  • Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright, etc.
  • Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum “regulars”.
  • There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off your skills, or bring a bit of humor and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!
  • The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only.

To download the starter image, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser). It is in png format with a transparent background so the cutting out is already done for you.

When posting back your image — please use the blue reply button in this first post and use the 'Insert Photos' icon at the top of the reply box. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry, then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.

Have fun!

Dave

For me, this image makes a lot of sense because the French word for “spark plug” is "candle" (bougie).

Why is this a lucky dartboard?

I bet that dart lands in the board with a satisfying thud! Clever idea, Trevor!

I also see a certain, unlucky for some, number has gone but we now have two 7s 🙂

I see two numbers gone, replaced by two doubles.

I am still pondering over the tough task, Trevor.

As mentioned, I can see two numbers gone, both of which are considered unlucky by some; but that also applies to at least two others still there, one them sounding like death to some.

And maybe more importantly, this dartboard features an old symbol of death, even death sentence, which you can hit.

That must be local to you Jacob.  AFAIK thirteen is considered unlucky, so has been removed. Seven is lucky, so there are two of them.  What is the number of death?  I did Google, but found nothing significant.

Trevor, to our friends in southern Europe, and especially Italians, 17 more or less corresponds to 13; and 9, also unlucky for some, is replaced on the board by the second 8. In Chinese based languages 4 sounds like death.

But most disturbing is the shady Theta, old symbol of death (thanatos) and used when casting vote for the ultimate punishment.

Where is theta on that dartboard?

Dave, in the paler circle, mostly in the original 7, followed by the paler Veo.

It started by my spotting the distinctive different colouring and clicking the circle with the arrows to have a closer look.

Good news: the Spark X rocket seen taking off above has successfully landed on its launch pad, in Paris.

Haha, we just need Para Handy standing on the deck 🙂 I do wonder why he went over the bridge rather than under it though?

Edit : Although on thinking about it, it wouldn't run with a wet spark-plug.

Blimey.  I think that is an actual real photo!  I thought that was Charles De Gaulle at first glance, but I am now thinking it must be Leipzig-Halle.  You's have worry seeing a >500 ton aircraft with all of its weight on the overpass you were about to drive under.  It's about the same as 20 fully laden large trucks, which seems more manageable, but we live in an age when infrastructure is known to fail.   This one was just last year.

Euan, this greatest leap in development may also be the most astonishing SFTW challenge title interpretation ever.

I'm a little late with this because I wanted to do something out of the usual. Unfortunately, because it's short, there's no real way to embed it here; you'll have to go on over to YouTube to see it because Adobe apparently has no idea Shorts exist. Just right-click the sucker and open it in a new tab. lol

(Also, sound on and watch your volume.)
