Something for the Weekend - Part 242 - Smörgåsbord

Community Expert ,
Jun 06, 2025 Jun 06, 2025

Hi,

Thanks to all who took part in our last, 'Time and Tide', challenge.  We had lots of imaginative ideas and fun interpretations of Dave's photo of a North Yorkshire coastal town.

This week I'm helping Dave out, and I'm going to do something a bit different — mainly because I can't do the amazing photorealistic renders that Dave has started so many SFTW threads with.  This Smörgåsbord is an image buffet, many of which I have collected in my travels, and others that I have found online.

The Rules:

  • Use as many of my image elements as makes sense for your upload.  You can choose your own backgrounds.
  • Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright, etc.
  • Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum “regulars”.
  • There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off your skills, or bring a bit of humor and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!  Bonus points if you create something quirky (like my pen/rubber).  Minus points if you resort to a Mr Potato Head 😉
  • We usually provide starter images to use only for the challenges — they do have a habbit of reappearing in later challenges.  As this is a different kind of starter, you are welcome to keep and use my images as you like.  Just note that they are not all my images.

To download the starter image, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).  It is important to save the image to a local drive (rather than right click and copy) in order to retain transparency.

The robot factory thought they could just about get one more built from the parts they had left.  Oh well.  I'm sure its mum loves him.

I almost missed the nicely done shadow of the Penny Farthing.  I was pushing the low end trying to resolve whoever is wearing the witches hat, but...

I didn't see that coming.  Well seen, and very clever.

A beautiful job Dave. Really nicely done. Excellent attention to detail with the light and shading.  I love that you placed some objects behind others from the starter like the witch's hat behind the window from and below the church organ (Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik)  I love the subtle light in the window top right.  A top job that must have taken you some time to do.

A very clever reuse of the render you created three years ago for SFTW 171, Dave!

Thanks Trevor & Jane,
I did indeed start out with that rendered street scene. I managed to incorporate quite a lot of the objects (ticked below), although you would need to look ver closely to find some of them. I'll have to have another go and see if I can use the rest in a second image 🙂

Mr H. Robinson had solved the problem of getting his cat to exercise whilst he was on the journey to his club.

Best regards, Euan.

I suspect you'd have recieved a comment or two from cat lovers for this one Euan.  I found that same stock image, and spent time trying to swap the rider to the original bike, but I think your approach was a lot more sensible.  The four doors in the background reminds me of that scene in A Hard Days Night where John, Paul, George and Ringo enter four separate houses, and it cuts to an excellent visual gag.

Our cat insists on accompanying me when I take the dog out in the evening, and I walk across the road to the vineyard to keep him away from traffic.   I took this to send to the owner to let them know they had _three_ end of row posts down after a very heavy rain storm. The vines were in full leaf, and the extra weight of the water puts the wires in huge tension snapping the end posts at the diagonal brace.  Maisie, the dog, doesn't do long exposures well.

I thought I was substituting the polished brass sphere for one of those scary giant white balloons, but I looked at it again and tyhought it looked like a lense, or a Kai Power Tools bubble sphere, (you'll have to be proper old to get that reference).  I have added some shading and swapped out the image, but I can't unsee that bubble sphere now.  😞  I also know that it should reflect the back of the bike and Number 6, but the different angle would need to have been constructed, and it was more — call me lazy — than I wanted to do.
