I can't get rid of this on my iMac. Any suggestions? My Mac is 2017 with 24gb ram. I have all apps turned off when using PS. I am running the new Ventura iOS. Thanks in advance.

The earlier comment about "Ventura isn't iOS" meant that "iOS" is mobile and "macOS" is for desktops and laptops. Ventura is macOS13.

Photoshop 2017 is not compatible with macOS Ventura. Your paid subscription includes upgrades to Photoshop. The current version of Photoshop 2023 (desktop) is 24.6. Upgrading through the CC app might solve your issue.

No one has a solution after many years now. I think Adobe is making changes to work files internally, which then triggers iCloud to upload them to be current in the cloud. You need to find a way to NOT block all use of Photoshop while this happens. Put it on a queue to be done later.

When Photoshop hangs, this is the first thing to do, try resetting your Photoshop preferences. Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (macOS) immediately after launching Photoshop. You will be prompted to delete the current settings. You can also reset preferences upon a quit if Photoshop is running by going into General Preferences>General>Reset on Quit.

(macOS only) Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder*, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.

This action only affects the items found in the preferences dialog box. Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Photoshop Preferences file, including general display options, file-saving options, performance options, cursor options, transparency options, type options, and options for plug‑ins and scratch disks. Brushes (and lots of other setting) are not affected by the above instructions for deleting preferences. You may wish to make a screen capture of the settings in the Preferences dialog to reset them prior to deleting of this file.

Quit Photoshop.
Navigate to Photoshop's Preferences folder:

Now you can drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe for a backup of your settings

If that doesn't fix the issue:
Go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck Multithreaded Compositing - and restart Photoshop.

Go to Preferences > Performance... click Advanced Settings... and uncheck "GPU Compositing" - then restart Photoshop. Still hanging?

Resetting my Photoshop preferences did not fix the 30-50 second spinning ball, but it sure messed up my workspace. Ugh. How about telling us WHAT THE PS IS DOING WHEN THE BEACH BALL SPINS. Surely you know by now? This is NOT a new bug and it is extremely irritating.

Resetting restores Photoshop's internal preferences, which are saved when Photoshop closes. 

If they become corrupt then various issues can occur.

You may want to backup your settings and custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences.

in case of future issues, I suggest you make a copy as Adobe may need one to check problematic references. 

Quit Photoshop.
Go to Photoshop's Preferences folder

(See above about preserving preferences though! It’s worth preserving them unless they are corrupted.)

Uninstall Photoshop BUT make sure to choose the option “Yes, remove app preference”.

Once that process finishes, start the installation process and look into the “Advanced Options”. Uncheck “Import previous settings and preferences” and choose to “Remove old versions”.

This only started when I upgraded to V24 of Photoshop. Clearing prefs did NOT help. Turning off Graphics Processor GPU did not help.

I tried resetting preferences. What an ENORMOUS SCREWUP THAT IS OMG

AND IT DID NOT HELP. The spinning ball is still there every time, almost immediately after I start to work on an image, after just a few seconds.

Is this some sort of screw up with iCloud backup delay of temp files?

@wd52 if you have tmp files in iCloud or running TimeMachine backing up those files while actively working it most definitely will cause delays/lags while those files are being accessed outside Photoshop.

I've set my TimeMachine prefs to ignore the system folder which also includes the PS system resources like tmp files.

How do you set Time Machine to ignore System files. When I try, it refuses to accept my System folder from backups.

Can't drag System folder but YOU CAN use the "+" button and select the Sytem Folder in an Open Dialogue.

Go to Time Machine options

Exclude then click the + at the bottom.

Then in your navigation window, back out to the Macintosh HD leve.

Select System, Library and Applications and add to the Exclusion list.

A few reasons I manage this way:

1. Smaller backup sizes overall.

2. Restoring system or application files from a backup are sketchy at best.

3. I backup all my preferences/presets/etc for Photoshop manually in a separate location.

Stopping Time Machine backup has not affected the spinning beach ball at all. Shortly after opening my first picture (after reboot), the spinner appears and no actions (other than force quit) can be taken with Photoshop.

Photoshop is a "startup app" on my MacOS Monterey, and often sits for an hour or more without use in the background. But whenever I first open a picture file (usually .jpg or .png), after perhaps 10 seconds, the spinning ball appears for 30 seconds or more.

I have posted there, Thank you. No one has a solution after many years now. I think Adobe is making changes to work files internally, which then triggers iCloud to upload them to be current in the cloud. You need to find a way to NOT block all use of Photoshop while this happens. Put it on a queue to be done later.

So. I tested this with the ethernet cable removed; so no connection to internet, so no writing of files to iCloud. That’s NOT the problem. 

The delay happens no matter zero ethernet etc.

I am stumped and upset this delay happens every time I first open a pic in Photoshop.
