Suddenly, no access to GPU settings in preferences

A few days ago, I tried to use the previously working face aware sliders in Liquify. However, all the values were greyed out, the sliders were unresponsive and there was an exclamamtion mark next to the face aware heading itself. The value in the adjacent woindwow was also greyed out.

At the same time, I found that I was unable to access any of the GPU settings under the Performance preferences tab. See the image below.

I shoot headshots and tidy things up within Liquify quite regularly, so this is a big deal for me and I'd appreciate any advice as to hpw i can get things back to the way they were. I've tried reinstalling PS to no avail, and have determined that the GPU(s) in my laptop are working. I'm using a Macbook Pro running Catalina (OS 10.15.7) and everything was fine until a couple of days ago. My graphics processor is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M.

One more detail, Tony, which I just noticed about your system. Open CL became unstable in late April as a result of a security patch released at that time. It appears as if a May security patch may have fixed it, so try installing that:

In 22.4.2 we forced Photoshop to turn off OpenCL due to that instability, but if you run the May patch (or upgrade to OS 11.3, where we confirmed with Apple the issue was also fixed), Photoshop could pop back to life. Give that a go. This may be why gener7 was able to get things working again.

I'll look into that, Mark - it wasn't immediately apparent how I install the patch alone and my system is completely up to date in any event. However, that may just be me bieng less than bright!

The ability to enable GPU hardware acceleration appears to still be broken in 22.4.2.
My admittedly long-in-the-tooth 2013 Macbook Pro Retina w/ NVidia GT 650M also still exhibits this problem in 22.4.2 with all available macOS Catalina updates applied.     

Rolling Photoshop back to 22.3.0 re-enables the ab ility to enable GPU Accel and work from the 3D menu.

Thanks for stepping in to explain what's going on with the GPUs, Mark.  My 2012 MBP has an Intel HD4000 which is Directx 11, but with 22.4.2 I got OpenCL back. I know it is dated, but luckily what parts of Photoshop I use isn't affected and if I wanted to use Lighting Effects for example, I have PS 2020 at the ready. I've known for the longest of times some features will require the hardware my system doesn't have, but Ps 2021 still works for me and hopefully will continue until the M1 is ready for prime time.

After a clean installation of Windows 10, and reinstallation of i.a. Photoshop Version: 23.2.1 20220222.r.303 eedc582 x64, the program can no longer find the GPU on my Graphics Card GeForce GTX 285 that meets all specifications. It has worked on my previous versions of Photosop until a version in 2021.
Since it's pretty hopeless to work with layers and heavy files without the GPU enabled, I would greatly appreciate help.

That card is too old to work reliably on either modern operating systems or Photoshop (it's from 2009).  You would need both a minimum of 1.5GB VRAM AND support for Direct X 12, which that card does not.

The industry has been shifing away from a technology layer called Open CL and Open GL (which affects how software uses GPUs) for the last few years, and in order to keep up, Photoshop has had to shift along with the times, and older cards won't work in today's Photoshop like they might for previous versions.

@Peter Thornvig , yep, I believe that card should be good. For anyone wondering how I determine if a card is going to work or not, Photoshop wants the GPU to support Direct X 12 and score 2000 or better on this Passmark speed site: https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/directCompute.html

Looking up that card, it looks like it's about a 5000, which should be fine. I didn't find 'Ultra' on there, but if it has 6GB RAM, I'm guessing that it's modern enough to work; 4 years ago nobody dreamed of putting 6GB onto a GPU except for the highest end cards.
