Hi Scott,
The only reason I can think of for this to happen is a baseline shift. This is a character setting, so the text has to be selected. If you don't see it:
Baseline Shift is the control marked below. All characters must be selected.

You are correct. That box had 48 pt in it. I don't know how that got there, because I sure didn't do it. Hopefully, Photoshop will remember that I want it to be 0 next time.

Draw a shape that you want. Then take the type tool first one and click on the edge of the shape and start typing.
