@jane-e @Trevor.Dennis I've been using PS for over 20 years. I do know how to change kerning and tracking. As I mentioned in my intial post:
And yes, I don't have tracking or kerning set to a negative in PS.
It's not an Adobe font. It's Roboto from Google. If i could delete this post I could, but for some odd reason this forum does not allow that. As I mentioned previously, nevermind.

To start with, the font looks different in these screenshots. Are you using the same font?

Yes. Same font, same weight, same everything. Sorry I should have specified.

And how do you get it "rendered" in Ps and in the browser?

Sorry if I'm not using the correct terms. I type into PS and hit enter. Then it renders... not sure what else to call that.
In a browser, I type in a URL and the page loads. Images, words, etc. render in the browser window.
Probably a week or two ago, fonts in PS looked correct. Now they do not. Something changed.

How do you get the same text (and the same font) in the web browser?

.... it's called webfonts.
Nevermind.

Hi @colin-p
It looks like an issue with Tracking and/or Kerning. Can you show a screen shot of your Character panel (Window menu)? Click an insertion point in the text with your Type tool first.
Is the Typeface from Adobe Fonts? Or??
You can also Reset the Type tool to put it back to its defaults. Select the Type tool, then right-click the Type tool icon in the options bar (not Tools panel) and choose Reset tool. You might need to do it twice.

Almost certainly what Jane has said. Select the text, open the Character Panel and set tracking to zero.
Alternatively, select the Type tool and reset it from the top left corner of the Options Bar

Can you humor us one more time and try the Adobe Font version of Roboto? (Pick any of the 28 typestyles.)
https://fonts.adobe.com/fonts/roboto
Another reason for bad spacing is that there might be an issue with the typeface itself.

My apologies for not knowing your skill level. Sometimes it's hard for us to gauge.

Interesting. I didn't know foundries had taken Roboto and done their own versions. The Google version is the original. I wasn't using a webfont on the desktop. I am a print designer that picked up web design and development. I know fonts. I don't use Adobe fonts because managing them is a serious pain in neck. The Creative Cloud desktop app font section is an utter joke. Adobe should be embarrased by it.
Anyway, I tried your suggestion. It seems to work better... maybe. I also noticed I have an OpenType (truetype flavor) version and a normal TTF font installed. That may have been causing issues.

Hi Colin,
In spite of saying "humor us one more time", I'm back again. 😊 Adobe has typefaces from various type foundries and when I looked once more I saw something I hadn't noticed the first time.
Roboto on Adobe Fonts is from Google! (See my yellow highlight.)
It looks like you have a workable solution now, but let us know if we can further assist.

Doh! I was not looking at the correct thing on the Adobe fonts site (I don't go there too often!). You are correct. No worries about replying. 🙂
