Text tool making a pink background and not functioning AdobePhotoshop 6.0

New Here ,
Jan 11, 2019 Jan 11, 2019

I am working in Adobe Photoshop 6.0.  When I select the text tool and type, it originates with a black font, then as you type, the font turns white on a pink background. When you then use a different tool (the move to set arrow), the text is a dashed/ ghost line, but no new layer is established, and the font then disappears when something else is performed.

What do I have going on, is it a setting, or something else?

As suggested above by Semaphoric, most likely you have the Type Mask Tool selected as shown below:

You want the regular Type Tool as shown below

(click on the icon pointed to below in the tool options bar)

Hi

Are you talking about Photoshop 6 released in 2000 or Photoshop CS6 released in 2012

The 6.0 from 2000 .  I know it is ancient, but I only use it on occasion!

Try resetting Photoshop preferences, I assume that's the way you do it for V6

To restore preferences quickly using a keyboard shortcut: Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings. The new preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop

It sounds like you have the Type Mask tool selected. Click and hold on the Type tool, and be sure you have the Type tool selected:

I can copy the program folder anywhere and I can even run it off a USB stick provided it's Windows. This was before Photoshop was locked down with activation.

Just know v6 never heard of Terabyte drives and will not recognize them.

It's Mac OS 9.2.2 on a 2001 Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 800 MHZ.

(originally a 733 overclocked to 800, a very easy mod)

As of 9_2019 upgraded to 933 MHZ with a new processor daughter card.

I have the same problem and I do not have the wrong text selected. It is horizontal text as it has always been.

I just had this problem, too.  It was not the wrong tool.
I was trying to open a PDF in photoshop to annotate it.

I was able to fix it by going to File --> Open as Smart Object...

Opening it that way did what I wanted it to do.

I too have the same problem. What is most irritating is it seems like I constantly have some weird issue or another with adobe nowdays. Things that randomly appear or settings that get changed when I never mess with them. And adobe or so called community helpers act like they just dont understnd the problem at the time. These issues happen no matter what computer I use with my registered acct. That tells me its an adobe problem. [illegal activity removed] I dont need all the [cursing removed] new fluff I never use in these new versions.

The problem for the OP is that they were using the Type Mask tool on CS6 five years ago in 2019. If you are also using the Type Mask tool, then switch to the Horizontal Type tool instead. The Type Mask tool makes a selection that needs to be filled with pixels. It is not live text.

If you have a different problem, please post a screenshot so we can understand and help with your issue. Also tell us your OS and version of Photoshop if you are not using CS6.
