Thanks for today's Photoshop update, Adobe, but there's still a problem with the Text tool.

Whenever I first launch Photoshop, I cannot select text, either with the Text tool, or with double-clicking on the text block with the pointer tool. I must first "re-set" the Text tool, by creating a new RGB document, grab the Text tool, click-drag a text block (it fills with Lorem Ipsum), close that new document (don't have to save it), then if I go into any subsequent document (either RGB or CMYK), the text tool works as it should, and I can select text, or I can make a block of text active if I click it with the pointer tool.

This is very annoying.

Could you please share Photoshop's Help > System Info dialog text here?

Also, please try try enabling "Legacy compositing" located in Photoshop's Preferences > Performance, then relaunch Photoshop and let us know if it helps.

Hi

No problem here with 20.0.6 text using Windows 10. It is not entirely unusual to have to do a preference reset after an upgrade, so it will be worth a try.

At first it seemed that this was the solution. Following these steps, re-launching, then creating a new document allowed me to use the Type tool as it should.

But then I launched an existing Photoshop document, then tried to select a block of text. Double-clicking the text block with the pointer tool would not highlight the text block properly so that I could edit the text. Attempting to select text characters in the text block with the Type tool did not work.

I should add that I tried this remedy on two separate Mac computers, one of which is running the latest Mac OS.

I could only correct the problem by (once again) launching a new RGB document, click-dragging a new text block with the Text tool. Then I could go to my other opened document and select text, either by clicking on it with the Pointer tool, or with the Text tool.

This is still a glaring defect in the program. What's the deal, Adobe??

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software?

I have the same setup as you and do not experience any of the issues you are describing.

Is this error only with a particular font?

Do you have your selection tool set to Auto Select Layer? It could be on the wrong layer when you are double clicking.

Yes, tried uninstalling then reinstalling.

Happens with any font.

Yes, Auto Select Layer is selected.

Yes, I'm on the correct layer.

This is probably relevant: If I create a new CMYK document, and try to work with text, I experience these problems. However if I create a new RGB document, everything works as it should. Once I get the type tool(s) working in my RGB document, I can work without trouble in any subsequent RGB or CMYK document I open or create. But if I close Photoshop, then relaunch, I must once again create an RGB document, then made a block of text, if I want the text tools to work.

I did some poking around. Apparently this issue was known since October of 2018 ( Cant Highlight Text ) .

So I found a solution being offered by a user on Page 3 of that thread:

"The only permanent solution seems to be to change the change the Drawing Mode from Advanced to Basic in the Advanced Settings of the Graphics Processor Settings in Photoshop preferences, Performance section."

I tested the solution and it seems to be working. I'm just not entirely certain what the performance sacrifice is (if any).
