The History action list doesn't scroll enough

The History list doesn't scroll enough - I work with 2 24" monitors - with Photoshop I work on one of them.

Since the last 2 updates, when the history action list is full, I can't see the last couple of items.  Since I often make a lot of edits, not being able to easily go back just 1 or 2 steps is difficult because I don't see the last one or two.  It's possible that the last 1 or 2 are below the task bar.

I hope there's something I can do, or something can be done about this.

This is all I can get.  The bottom is the task bar with the history list behind it -- which I can't show -- so when I have numerous edits, I don't necessarily see the ones at the bottom.   Then I have to use Edit/Undo.  As I said, this wasn't an issue 3 versions ago and earlier.

Can you show us your entire screen?

Without seeing your screen, I'm going to make a guess that the application frame for Photoshop is either too big for your screen or has been moved down so part of it is off screen. This would cause part of your history panel to also be missing. We can see for sure when we see your entire screen, or you can try resizing the window and then moving it up — or by maximizing your application.

This is just a guess, but it could cause your issue.

Nothing from the rest of Photoshop is "hidden."  It's all there except for the history list panel.

Forgot to mention that I know I'm not seeing the bottom ones when I don't see the last step I did.

Is the history panel docked or floating? Depending, dock/undock it and check again.

It's floating.  I didn't know it could be docked.  I just looked for this option in Preferences but can't find it.  Where exactly is it?

Just click and drag to dock it to the panel

Thanks.  It's strange - The first time I dragged it, it stuck.  But I wasn't in full screen.  

When I clicked to full screen, the history panel wasn't stuck*.  And I couldn't get it to stick until I went from full to partial screen (sorry, I can't remember when it's not at full screen), AND then back to full screen.  Then it stuck.

*(Stuck means I can still drag it side to side.)

I don't understand the second screen shot.  I don't have any panel symbols as shown here.  

Please elaborate.

Thank you for the screenshot. Note that part of your toolbar is also off-screen. Your Application Frame has been moved or resized so that the lower part of the Photoshop Window is off-screen. Resize and move the window or click the Maximize button in the upper right.

The screenshot was made with Photoshop Full Screen, so I'm not sure what Maximize button you're referring to.  I can't make the Photoshop window any larger.

The point is that you drag until you see a blue marker line. Then you drop. Now it's docked to whatever position you dragged to. Docked panels or docked groups stick to the edge of the workspace.

The image goes under a floating panel, but on top of a docked panel.

My two cents worth:  You need to change the number of history states in your preference panel- under performance.   As you go past the number of steps you have set up (more history steps require more ram) steps stop disappearing.    

I have my history state set to 56- why?  I dunno.  Yours may be set to something smaller than that and that is probably the source of your problem.  

What does not help:  your partial screenshot- it would answer so much- but it does look to me line your scrollbar in the history panel window is there- there isn't any problem based upon that.

The image below just shows the history panel undocked.   I typically drag all my open windows over to my second monitor to keep things a bit cleaner on my main screen.

History lis is set to 200.  I'll try increasing and decreasing, and see what happens.  Does this function require a PShop restart?

no.   A history of state of 200 means more ram would get used as you work on a project.   I have a monoply game board I've been working on -345 layers.   I never change my history state number on purpose---- it's really nothing to waste a lsot of time on.

 I tried lowering it 60, made no difference.  Then I changed it to 300, made no difference (at full screen).

Poor photo selection of Photoshop full screen, with the history panel.  I saved the photo - can;'t remember if "save" appears on the list, but I did one other edit before saving which doesn't show.

What is screen scaling % set to in Windows? It looks like a fairly high scaling factor, judging by the rather big size of fonts and icons.

Try to go down one 25% step. This makes the UI elements a tiny bit smaller, but maybe it rectifies this little glitch, and then you can try to go back.

As for the number of history steps: I don't think that's the cause, the older steps will just fall off the list. However, 200 is an awful lot of history steps! You need to consider that this comes at a price. It will eat up your disk space very quickly. Every history step potentially adds the full uncompressed file size. This is way beyond any installed RAM; that's irrelevant. This eats disk space.

Personally, even though I have a high-spec machine, I hesitate to go above 20-30 history states, because I consider it an unnecessary drain on resources. If you rely on adjustment layers, smart objects and other non-destructive techniques, you won't need to go back in history very much.

Thanks for the reply.   The thing with the history is that the problem began only 3 versions ago.  It worked fine until then.  

Aren't the history steps deleted when the project/photo is saved, or when Photoshop is shut down?
