Trying to outline Letter A minus the counter

I'm trying to outline the outside of the letter A only. The problem is I want to maintain the counter's emptiness. I'm at a loss as to how to accomplish this. I fill the counter in first then outline it, but then when I delete the counter the stroke appears.

In that case, duplicate the layer, and fill in the counter. Then continue with stroke, fill opacity, and group. as above.

With your type active, in the menu Type > Create Work Path. Delete the counter, and use the remainder to mask a fill layer.Add a stroke, and set the Fill Opacity to zero. Finally, Group the two layers.

When you say fill opacity what do you mean? I'm not sure what to do with that.

I'm sorry if I'm being unclear but what exactly am I supposed to change the fill opacity on? If I change the layer it also changes the stroke opacity.

Like in the first image I posted. The Color Fill layer is selected. Its opacity is 100%, and just below that, its Fill is 0%..

Thank you! I was getting confused because when you said fill opacity I thought you were talking about regular opacity. Thanks again. Anyway, it worked like charm!

I was able to create a mask from a selection. I'm having trouble understanding "use the remainder to mask a fill layer".
