OK this is weird, and I discovered it by accident so I don't know if it is a bug or a strange documented feature.
Lay down some text using Miriad Variable Concept —I have tried it with a couple of the variable options and it did the same thing.
Now double click the type layer to highlight the text, and start typing over the text.
At some point throw in a forward slash, and keep typing.
The rest of the line suddenly grows serifs, least ways it does for me.
What The Heck? I tried some non variable fonts and it didn't happen. I have not tried it with the other variable fonts as of yet.

Strange things are happening. It seems like Myriad Variable Concept does not have forward slash defined for some fonts (font styles) and it displays empty text fields in the Properties panel when a particular font is chosen (like Myriad Variable Concept Light). Sometimes text fileds with name of the font and text field with font style are empty while other times it displays font name but text field with font style is empty.

Hi Trevor
If I insert a / it uses Times New Roman for the / but the rest of the text is unaffected

If I include a / and keep typing then the remainder of the word is completed in Times New Roman

Bojan's explanation sounds very plausible, and odd as the forward slash behaviour is, the Variable Concept fonts are so useful I can easily forgive them a few foibles. Pete.Green can bump it to the Photoshop team if he thinks they would be interested, but it is more of a quirk than an annoying bug.

Thanks for pinging me Trevor -- This is strange indeed, and I'm able to reproduce this.
If you have text layer with a / already in it and swap the font to Myriad Variable Concept a box with an X (XBox?) shows.

I also noticed the strange behavior when typing with Myriad Variable Concept, and then throwing in the / .. In my case it switched to Helvetica which is what I was using while testing. It seems to jump back to the last used known font with a defined / character and then continues typing with that font change. Seems odd indeed.
I've passed this on to our type team to investigate further.
Regards,
Pete

OK Pete. I can imagine design purists turning their noses up at the variable fonts, and they do feel bit like cheating, but they are one of my favourite new features in recent major updates. I mean why make life difficult when such flexible solutions are available?

On my Windows system I found I do not have a Myriad Variable Concept font i have Miriad Variable Concept and see what you see on your Mac when there is no / in the current font Photoshop seems to switch from the current font to a font that goes. When I use Minion Variable Concept when I insert the / I can see the Glyphs change because of the font switch.
