Unable to move layer [Mac]

I've read everything I can find but still cannot move layers. Created a new document sized to accept two files I want to project together. New files are stacked and labeled Layer 1 and 2 above the background. Using move tool, auto-select is unchecked, not in Quick mask mode. Latest updates, most recent Mac OS. I'm returning to Photoshop after many years away. There's a lot that's new, so I expect it's simple, but I'm baffled.

Can you show a screenshot of your Layers panel?

• If one layer is a Background layer, convert it to a regular layer by clicking the lock icon
• If either layer is locked, unlock it
• What is the file format — png, tiff, psd, jpeg, gif?
• Are you working in RGB, CMYK, Index, Lab, or Grayscale?

Files are RGB Tiff. All are unlocked.

I can't see anything wrong from your screen shot, but I am not sure exactly what you are trying to do? 

You do have Auto Select checked, so with the move tool selected, the layer under the cursor will atomatically be selected whether that is what you want or not.

You have both Layers 1 and 2 selected in the screen shot, so both layers would be moved.  Those layers aoppear to be aligned with each other, and when you havee two layers under the cursor location, and Auto Select checked, the layer higher up the stack is the one that will be selected and moved.

Is this happening with just the one document, or in all documents including new ones?

Can you give us more detail and describe your workflow?  Like you say, it's probably something simple, but you are absolutely OK to ask questions regardless of how complicated the answer might be.

Hi Thanks for pitching in.

I did uncheck Auto-Select, but nothing changed. All I'm trying to do is position the two layers side by side. I could not drag and droip the two images to the background, had to copy and paste, they came in centered and I could not move them. They show two possible effects on iPhone Pro: normal photo and portrait. I'l flatten the image and project it to explain portrait mode and a shallow depth of field to a small group as part of a workshop. As I said, it should be simple.

If you are running a workshop then you'll know what you are doing, so if things are not working as they should, something might be broken.  I am hestitant to suggest resetting preferences as layers not responding to the move tool does not sound like a bad Preferences issue, and it is always a pain to put everything back to how you want it afterwards.

Have you tested with a different document?  Especially a new one.  If the issue persists in othewr documents, then go ahead and reset Preferences.  I'll change the subject line to show you are using a Mac.  Is that Monterey 12.6?  What hardware are you using?  Does it have the M1 chip?

Here's another thing to try: you have a selection marquee. This shouldn't matter, but try deselecting. You don't need a selection when you are moving the entire layer.

I don't know why but today it worked. The only change I made was to use Command D to deselect everything.

Yes it is Monterey 12.6 on a Macbook Pro from 2015 so it is an Intel chip. 

And--Yes, I will be running a workshop, but the subject is Photography and the Art of Seeing. I definitely cannot teach Photoshop.  Thank you all for your help. If you see anything in this screenshot that explains the problem and solution, please let me know.

Now, I'm really losing it. I saved the file with layers as a PSD, Quit Photoshop, reopened Photoshop and the PSD file, selected a layer, and when I tried to move it the entire image of 2 layers plus background moved. I quit Photoshop, reset Preferences, tried again. No change. I opened a completely different file with no layers, tried to crop it, but could not move it within the crop frame. Tried the move tool, the whole file including the crop frame moved. Does any of this make any sense at all?

Hello, the crop tool behavior might have changed if it 's a really long time you haven't used it.

one thing I noticed that does not have an influence on layer movement is that all images do not have the same color profile, as per the asterisk next to the bit depth. 
Could you please post the contents of Photoshop's Help>System Info... menu, so that we get to know your OS, its version, the exact version of Photoshop you are running, the date of the GPU driver, etc.

Here's another clue: when selecting ANY tool, I get the hand cursor and move tool functions on the entire image.

Might the entire application be corrupted?

Hi, this happens if the Ctrl key(PC) or CMD key (Mac)(*) is pressed down. Is your computer fonctionning nromally in other software?

I would also try to restore your preferences to the default using this manual method:
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually it lets you keep a copy on the desktop that you can use to revert the process.

There is a macOS issue that may possibly be causing this. Can you go to:

• Apple menu > System Prefs > Accessibility > Keyboard > Navigation > uncheck "Full Keyboard Access"?

Let us know if this fixes your second issue.

Hi Pierre,

On a Mac the Ctrl key is equivalent to the right mouse button. The equivalent of Windows Ctrl key is the Command key. (FYI) 🙂

Hi all,

I contacted Adobe Support who reset Preferences and Settings and restarted the Mac. Seems to have worked. She said "It was stuck" I don't know why it happened but I'm happy to go back to work. Thank you all for your help.

Thank you all for your help. The problem turns out to be hardware based, an old and feeble Intel graphics card.

Looks like you have the Red channel selected for possibly both layers.

Go to the Channels panel and click on RGB for both layers, then see if you can move them.
