Unable to update smart object files due to a program error.

I'm often having problems with smart objects in Photoshop, when I apply it to a file it is fully accessible, however if I open this file the other day and try to access the smart object, it gives the following error.

"Unable to update smart object files due to a program error."

If you go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck Use Graphics Processor. Restart Photoshop. Does the problem go away?
