Understanding layers and blending question

I'm attempting a portrait in PS. I block in shadow and light on different layers over a sketch layer. When attempting to blend or make a gradient, do I merge the previous layers? What is a good way to approach this? Thanks in advance.

First of all, I am not sure that I understand what you want to ask. Usually shadow layer goes below not above... It will be the best to post screenshot with Layers panel visible what can explain what exactly you want to ask.

Yes, you are correct, shadow layer should be below. What I'm asking is, with shadows and lights on separate layers, how do you blend them smoothly, or rather, how are pixels from different layers blended together?
