Unlocking bezier handles on warp tool

Hi all.

I'm trying to warp something using the new & improved warp tool, but I can't figure out how to "unlock" the bezier handles so that they're not all at right angles to one another. With the path tool, you can get that arrowhead icon & drag on a hadle to "break" it so that the two handles are no longer in a straight line. Is that possible with the new warp tool? If not, that seems like a huge limitation.

In the attached screen shot, you can see my problem. The top right hand corner seems to be free to move so that the horizontal handle runs across the top, whilst the vertical handle runs at a random angle following the direction of the edge. With the next handle down, it seems to be fixed at 90 degrees, so that whilst the vertical handles can be made to follow the edge, I can't seem to make the horizontal handle drop down to keep the line straight. This is not such a problem for an abstract image like this one, but if there was type or any kind of horizontal detail in the image, it would be a disaster. I know I could use liquify or puppet warp to achieve a similar effect, but this would be a far more accurate solution, if only I could unlock those pesky handles from their 90 degree home.

Ah, there is the old Feature Request:

»Implemented«, albeit not in a meaningful way.

Thank you.

I think if I wanted to accurately distort something in this way, I'd probably use After Effects, which has had a super-sophisticated warp tool like this for years. (In fact I used it once on a job & it was a very good result.)

To be fair, I think the ability to customise the number of grid lines & add/remove additional lines appears to have been implemented pretty successfully, although I've not used it much yet. I just don't understand why they didn't just do the job properly & have the handles adjustable the way you already can in any number of Adobe products.

It truly boggles the mind, that one company can be so inconsistent across its range of products. It's like they don't talk to one another.

In any case, if the answer to my question is "not yet" I guess the sensible thing to do would be for me to suggest it in the apropriate manner.

Thanks again. 🙂

There was a long standing Feature Request on being able to add gridlines to the Warp (which I currently can’t locate) and it was implemented wrong.

Photoshop 2020: The handles of the warp-non-corner-points still snap to 90 ̊ angles on editing

For the time being you could take the »round-trip« through Illustrator to use its Envelope Distort.
