Updated today Photoshop CC 2018 - Program freezes when attempting to apply brightness / contrast

New Here ,
Feb 06, 2018 Feb 06, 2018

I noticed an update for my CC 2018 Photoshop today in my CC window and after the update my program continually freezes when I attempt to apply brightness / contrast.  A window pops up saying the program is attempting to read a Tiff file but will not quit when clicking Cancel.  I have to quit the program in my task manager and restart and then it does the same thing over again.  Any idea what the problem is or is it the update?

Is the problem only with that one file, or with any file open in Photoshop?

Does Photoshop crash only when you apply the Brightness/Contrast adjustment, or does it crash when you apply any other adjustment too (Levels, Curves, Vibrance, etc.)?

Are you applying Brightness/Contrast from the Image menu > Adjustments, or as an Adjustment Layer (from the Adjustments panel)?

I have the same issue. Everything is fine but when I try to adjust the brightness of a layer the icon changes to the eyedropper tool and I'm frozen.

Just a follow up. I went into Preferences and disabled Tools> Rich Tooltips and Tools > Tooltips. I switched Performance > Advanced Processor Settings > Drawing Mode to Basic and under Technology Previews I unchecked everything except Enable Preserve Details 2.0

I am not 100% certain if one of these helped but at least for the past 2 hours it has not happened again.

These are definitely going to improve the performance. Let us know how it goes.

It has happened repeatedly with the Brightness/Contrast adjustment, and am [attempting] applying the adjustment from the menu.

<Are you applying Brightness/Contrast from the Image menu > Adjustments, or as an Adjustment Layer (from the Adjustments panel)?> I haven't tried these.

I have applied the settings that stormweasel suggested, but Brightness/Contrast crashed immediately when testing Brightness/Contrast on the same PSD file.

This needs to get fixed ASAP

The brightness and contrast issue is a new bug only in the latest version on Macs. Adobe is aware but in the meantime you can eithet:

1. Turn off rulers

Or

2. Move the dialogue outside the Photoshop window

Or

3. Use adjustment layers

Hi Jackie2881,

Sorry that Photoshop is not responding when you adjust brightness / contrast on your images.

Does that happen with all the images and all file formats like Raw, Jpeg and Tiff(as you've mentioned)?

Could you please post a screenshot of the error message prompt saying that "Photoshop is attempting to load a tiff file"?

Thanks,

Akash

I too have PS freeze when I use the Brightness/Contrast. I've the latest version of PS, and uising Mac OS Catalina 10.15.4.  Sometimes, if I wait, it will close the B/C screen and perform the action from the slide bar. More often, I  must force quit. I am working with PS files. This bug stinks.

you probably should have started a new discussion, since CC 2018 isn't really supported. It threw me off when I saw it pop up, I'm like "what? There was a recent update for 2018?"

LATEST

"I've the latest version of PS"

Hi a_britt,

What is the version number instead of "latest"? You posted to a two year old thread and our answer may vary with your version.
