Updating Camera Raw in Photoshop

New Here ,
Nov 21, 2019 Nov 21, 2019

I've just spent over 2 hours chatting to an absolutely useless Support person called Preeti on the Adobe website.  She now tells me that I should contact someone here, so I am hoping that there is actually someone with some sense and knowledge here!  I'm soooo angry at the amount of time I wasted today.

I want to open a Canon RAW file in Photoshop CS5.1. The version of Camera Raw plugin currently loaded is 6.7.0.339

I have successfully downloaded a number of later versions today, none of which seem to update the Camera Raw plugin in Photoshop or Bridge.

How do I get to a later version of Camera Raw so that I can open a file from my Canon EOD 700D???

Camera Raw 6.7 is the latest version compatible with CS5, and your camera requires version 8.2.

You can download and install the free Adobe DNG converter, which will convert (copies of) your raw files to the DNG format, which can be opened in CS5. You will have to set Compatibility to Camera Raw 6.6 or later in preferences.

Read the instructions on the download page carefully.

Alternatively, you can subscribe to the Photography plan, which gives you the latest versions of Photoshop, Bridge and

ACR 6.7 is the latest that will install and run under Photoshop CS5.1.

You need a newer version of Photoshop to run later ACR versions. CS5.1 is almost ten years old by now.

An alternative is the free DNG converter, which will convert your files so that they can be opened in ACR 6.7. Make sure to set the right compatibility setting.
