I have an illustrator file with several artboards linked to PS file. On some occasions, when updating the smart object (Update Modified Content), the location changes. What could cause this? What i have noticed is that when i hit ctrl + T, the object appears bigger in transform mode. But this is always not the case.

yes, you need to update to the latest and try again. Bugs get patched all the time and if you're a year behind, there's a good chance it's been fixed already.
Yes. Thanks! 23.1.1 works. Although one detail still moves a few mm, but i guess we can call this answered.

Does it occur if there is only one artboard.

Yes. Deleted all artboards, and it still does it.

Did you crop to »Trim« when placing the linked Smart Object or something like »Bounds«?

Always crop to bounding box

That seems imprudent.
If you add or remove or move elements in Illustrator the Bounding Box can naturally change (if the affected elements include the leftmost, topmost, rightmost or lowermost).
Edit: Try Trim Box.

Tried relinking the object using Trim box, but it still moves. Am i doing something wrong?

That it would move when you relink with another Box seems expectable.
But after having set it to Trim Box: Does it move when updating the SO later on?

I replaced all smart objects with new trim box objects and as soon as i update the illustrator file, the issue still appears.

By providing a frame of reference that does not depend on the visible objects and their position (Trim Box) one should be able to maintain the position of objects in the linked Vector Smart Object that have not been moved.

I tried all 5 crop options, but the same issue is still there.

If i recall, this is a very, very old bug that may or may not have been fixed.

Seems to work as expected here, but I did not test extensively.

That is not what i am doing. I place each artboard as a separate object. I do not move them around in my Illustrator file.

I change the visible layer
I tried more and maybe someone can confirm this: When there are clipping masks used in the illustrator file, that have objects inside which are bigger than the artboard, then the issue occurs since the trim box, or any other box changes based on the hidden objects?

I cannot reproduce that so far.
The Trim Box depends on the dimensions of the artboard/page, not the objects on it.
That’s why it makes sense using it instead of Bounding Box when one fiddles around with the visible content.
