Question

What's the quickest (least button clicks) way to apply a channel as a mask?

I've seen people recommend: Image...apply image...
But that seems like a lot of clicks.

I can alt-click the channel and then click the mask button on the layer I want to mask and that works but it duplicates the channel and then I have two alpha channels. Is there any way to apply the channel as a mask with fewer clicks?

Please advise. Thanks!

Hi

Another method is to note the number in the Channels panel and use Ctrl+Alt+x,where x represents the number. In this screen shot it would be Ctrl+Alt+6.

Thanks!

First, not alt-click, but ctrl-click.
Secondly, show a screenshot with the second alpha channel.
Perhaps you consider the active mask an alpha channel that it is not.

Yes! You're right. Ctrl-click. I miswrote.
So here is my channel/layer setup:

And here is it after I ctrl-click the channel and then hit the mask button  on the layer:

As you can see this also duplicates the channel that I applied as a mask. Not a big deal, but just requires a little cleanup afterwards.
