in my photoshop book - it is talking about layer masks.  can create 'from transparency'.  so i had a transp. layer - i painted a scribble just to see how this would work.  i get it.  except not sure what she means by the mask will be gray in the areas that are partially transparent.  if i paint a brushstroke and change the opacity to almost transparent or partially transparent - is that what she's talking about?

and i'm in cs6

You can paint in a layer mask just like in a normal layer, but only in B&W and shades of grey.  So you can do things like run a black to white gradient down the mask.       So where the mask is full black, the white layer shows through.  Where the mask is mid grey, the rainbow colours are semitransparent.

You can show the mask on the image area by Alt (Opt) clicking it.

You can use selection tools to aid you when painting on the mask.

layer masks are greyscale images. Black is transparent, white is opaque. Anything in between is more or less transparent.
