Here's what I've been doing:
1) Select the Subject and Mask background to make transparent

2) Fine-tune the edges of the subject for 10 min

3) hit "ok" and it outlines the subject in white dashes, but when I save to the desktop it saves normally and not as a transparent image, it also does this when I click "save" first and it asks me do you want to accept changes, and it does not save as a transparent background.

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) and the Properties Panel under »Select and Mask« visible?

What »Outout to«-setting did you choose?

It seems like you didn’t actually create any transparency but a Selection.

Hi, you need to convert the selection to a mask to hide the background: the third icon at the bottom of the layers panel, or Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal selection.
