Where is my work being stored and how do I specify it?

Pardon my igorance, as I am relatively new to Ps, but have worked with Lightroom for several years. I have tried researching how to specify where my files and work are stored but I have not  located a tutorial or Youtube that helps.  The topic is not even broached in two Adobe Ps books I purchased.

I must keep demands on my iMac storage to a minium because I am running out of disc space.

My photography workflow is to import everything I work on first to LrC, with my actual photo files on an external SSD drive (backed up).  I then edit some in Ps. When finished I usually but not always get a new TIF file back from Ps in LrC.

I don't understand why in Ps I see thumbnails of work in my Home directory, but they are not in Your Files. I don't know where work I was doing in Camera Raw is stored.  Cleary I am newby.

My preference is to store finished work in my LrC and large work in progress off of my computer--in the cloud or on that external SSD drive.

I would be very grateful to be be pointed to a doc or Youtube that explains all this.

Thanks in advance.  R

You have two choices: you can save your images in any folder you choose on your HD or external drive, or you can save to Adobe's Cloud.

  • If you save to your computer, you can save in any image format that is supported by Photoshop. If you save to the Cloud, they will be Cloud files with a .psdc extension
  • In Photoshop menu > Settings you can set the default location to the Cloud or to On my computer.

Be cautious about saving and opening directly to an external disk, as it can cause corruption. Adobe says to save to your HD, then move the file and repeat in reverse for opening.

Jane,

Thank you for the great answer. Very helpful.

Can you also help me understand what are the differences between the images I see in my Ps Home menu location and those I see in the Your files menu location.  Why are there more images in the former even though I have saved the work?

And what determines what appears in the Lightroom photos location?  I have processed many photos that returned to LrC but they are not in the Lightroom photos location in Ps.

Thanks,

Rob
