I am a casual user of Photoshop. I only use it to edit images such as lasso cropping, background removal, etc. Perhaps also to improve very old photographs to better quality. Which photoshop should I buy?

Photoshop Elements. You can 'buy' a license instead of subscribing to full blown Photoshop, a different and far more advanced product.

Both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements offer free trials. You might start with the trial for Photoshop Elements and if you need more than it offers, try the trial for Photoshop. Be sure to properly cancel trials before they end.

PS Elements is a lighter version aimed at consumer users.  It lacks all the bells & whistles of PS CC and has a shorter learning curve.

The pro-level Photoshop CC has on board background removal features that PS Elements does not have.  So if that's something you do a lot, you might need PS CC.  Try before you buy.

Photoshop Elements (approx $100, no subscription needed).

exactly.  If you need the most basic features, Elements is a great app.  Hell, I used it for awhile for drawing...until I realized the beauty of dual brushes.  My wife does a lot of photography work and gets a lot of it done with Elements and Lightroom.

Do they still do free trials?  As the old 7-day trial links all seem to be dead now.
If you have a link let me know as I have several students that would love to test it out.

Choose either the Photography Plan for $10/month for 12 months.  It's a deeply discounted bundle of software & services by subscription.

Or buy a single purchase of PS Elements only.

Your choice.

Hi Nancy, I don't know why this statement [You haven't answered my question. Which part of “which model should I get” understand?] went into your reply. It was totally for somebody else who was a bit rude (not in this post). It seems like my replies to all the good-hearted responders to my question went all over the place. You were very helpful. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I'm sorry for the mixed-up. Sidney
