Im working on an image ...

BTW I'm I'm using CS6 from installed from disk on a Windows 7 machine.

So I just finished a bunch of work on a different part of the image and I go to work on the underlying layers  only to find that I cant select the layers or turn them on or off. They are all showing the Eye icon indicating visable. But they are not visable and the icon is in fact grayed out. The layers are not locked but I can't figure out what is them locked up.

Any suggestionds would be greatly appreaciated

Could you please post a screenshot taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?

What about Groups, Clipping Mask Groups, Opacity, …?

Edit: For example are the Layers inside a hidden Group?

Are the layers part of a layer group? That could cause this behavior if the layer group itself was hidden. If not, definitely share a screen shot of the layers panel.

I echo the statements the others said. Could you share a screenshot of what's going on,  so we can get a better idea as to what's the problem.  Its really difficult to figure out what's going on just based on the description.

I'm afraid I have to apologize for not responding to all your replies. I had to change  a different machine  and the copy of the artwork I put on a thumb drive seems to have been corrupted or otherwise lost. When  I get a chance to get on that machine again I'l make another  copy of the file and Ill get back to ya'll on this one

Other possibility (excuse me if this is obvious, but it catches me all the time): you said you were doing a bit of work on another section.  Were you transforming anything?  You may just need to apply the transformation before you can select a different layer.
