Why does photoshop open every photo I download automatically? I want it to stop. Win 10.

Just as the post says, I don't remember when this started happening but it's really annoying. I can't figure out how to make it the default meaning that when I tell it to open, it uses PS without asking, but does not open it just because I downloaded it. TIA

I've been having the same issue. It looks like it's in browser settings (I'm using Chrome) to Open "safe" files after downloading. Uncheck that box.

Thanks, but I actually changed the way it opens from properties and made Windows Photo Viewer the default, and that fixed it.

It will still use PS by default though, right?

I think you need to explain exactly what you mean by "download". What exact event is it that triggers Photoshop to open?

Step one. Find image online.  Any source.

Step two. Right click. Save as.

Step three. Save.

Photoshop will now boot up if it was not already and open a new cavas with the image in it.

Huh. That is definitely not normal. I have no idea what's happening here, but you should try to remember if you have added any scripts or set up a "hot folder" or anything like that. It's probably outside Photoshop.

Perhaps this rings a bell with someone else...

When you install Photoshop, it's implicit that you want it to open all image files. After all, Photoshop is the top of the image editing foodchain, so it's a fair assumption. And so it sets file associations accordingly.

If you don't want that, for some reason, you can go into Windows, as per Ged's link above, and reset the whole thing. Or you can set file associations as you wish. If you want jpegs to open in Windows Photos, for instance, that's what you set for jpeg.

It's under Windows Settings > Apps > Default apps > Choose default apps by file type.

Hey, this is also happening to me.

I just reinstalled Photoshop because for some reason the paint bucket had stopped showing up in the toolbar. I could only see the gradient tool and clicking on it to change it wasn't working.

So last night I reinstalled Photoshop and now when I just downloaded a PNG I created online, Photoshop (which was open but idle) immediately opened the photo in the canvas without me dragging it to the canvas or doing anything to put it there. ?? This is fantastic for this file but I hope it doesn't do this with all the photos I download. Very strange but for the amount of edits I need to do I kind of like it.

Just open the file that contains your photos.  Right click on any photo, click "open with", then click "make this default".
