Working w Pasteboard

I know how to set up my panels, then lock them in place, but how do I make the gray full screen pasteboard with any file I open in Photoshop, center in the full screen gray pasteboard, but the file window is movable above the pasteboard? And if I move the file window, the solid gray pasteboard remains below. No. I do not want the checkerboard to appear when the file window is moved, only the solid gray pasteboard.

I did this once, but can't remember what button I clicked in setup.

I don't know if I understand you correctly. Try the "F" key. Press it several times to cycle through the different full screen modes
