Camera Raw Plugin Trouble

Explorer ,
May 18, 2024 May 18, 2024

I have downloaded and installed the raw plugin for adobe 2024 but am unable to open .raf raw files.  Adobe's request for me to download the plugin keeps repeating, on a loop it seems.  This is something new. I am on a Mac with the latest software and the M1 chip.  Anyone have any idea why this is happening?  I have restarted PSE but that didn't clear the issue.  Thanks.

Hi All,

Spent almost an hour today with an Adobe tech.  The workaround is that I will be able to use the Raw feature of my camera if I convert the .raf file into Adobe's DNG file.  "The issue is peculiar," said the tech.  Indeed it is.

Can you provide a screenshot of any messages you are receiving.

What model camera raw files are not opening?

And just to be clear, you have used the Help>Install Camera Raw . . . option in Photoshop Elements 2024 (from either the Organizer or Editor)?

tocdoc42,

Unfortunately, Photoshop Elements 2025 is stuck on Camera Raw 17.0 and has not been updated to Camera Raw 17.1, which is required for your Nikon Z 50 II.

https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

You can manually install Camera Raw 17.1 by following the directions in this thread:

Only one screenshot is displayed.

What OS are you using.

And we need the exact camera model used to shoot the files.

None of the posts you have made is a "correct answer"- marking a comment a "correct" when it clearly is not does not serve any purpose.

I cannot find a Fujifilm X 10 listed in Adobe's webpage for ACR supported cameras.  However, unless it is a brand new model camera, I'm assuming that it is one of the listed  models and that the updated ACR for Elements 2024 does support it.

Since I still haven't seen the second message that you are receiving, the only suggestion I have is to install the latest ACR plug-in manually.    See this post for instructions.  You have to follow the instructions precisely.

Hello, Greg

I have been using the X10 with Elements since about 2011.  the X20 (the next version of the X10) apparently has folded in the X10 features.  I will try the manual installation as you suggest.  Thanks for your help with this annoyance.

Hi.  Tried following the advice from Adobe but this section: On macOS:"/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-ins/CC/File Formats" does not provide anything after Application Support/.  The Adobe/Plug-ins/CC/File Formats sections aren't there.  I checked in Utilities and saw there was an Elements Add-on Utilities section and an uninstaller for that as well.   I believe that using  jpegs which do open and then converting them to raw might be my workaround.

If the folder doesn't exist, just create it.

A few things come to mind:

1. The Camera is pretty old.
2. The camera requires an old version of Adobe camera raw which is 32 bit.
3. Your OS can't run 32 bit anything.
4. You have to ensure that ACR is set up correctly first before you try to open a image with ACR.
5. If you manually installed ACR you put the 8bi in the wrong location.

I honestly think it's a combination of 32 Bit software (ACR) in a 64 bit only OS.

When using ACR you are making non destructive edits- you are working on a copy of the RAW file, not the actual raw file.

Hello Glenn,

It's odd but I have been using ACR for some time now including with the 64bit OS.  Elements suddenly changed yesterday when I was prompted to update.  Also the name FinePix is new to me.  I am looking at the owner's manual and the only i.d. is Fujifilm X 10.  The camera is old, 13 years but works fine; as I say the memory card is able to download to the Mac perfectly and before yesterday I was always able to edit in raw.  I have no idea if it was set up correctly nor do I know where or what the 8bi is.  I assume that the set up is right - it appears in the utility section of adobe, as it should.

It's just another mystery.  I have been able to use raw editing if I change the image to a .tiff from .jpg.  It's a journey.  Thanks for you input.

BTW, I have never indicated that there is a correct answer to any of the answers.  Someone must have done that, not me.

Have you seen this?   I made it nicer to look at when compared to earlier versions.  I am not the originator of this document but it has helped many.

The following is a workaround to update Camera Raw within Elements. It is recommended to wait for Camera Raw updates within the product for issue fixes.

If you haven't been able to update the Camera Raw plug-in for Elements, follow these steps, Primarily because your new camera needs a newer version of ACR to support RAW files:

Download and install the latest Camera Raw version from https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-in-installer.html

Quit all Adobe applications.

On macOS, double-click the .dmg file to mount it.

On Windows double-click the downloaded .zip file to unzip it.
(Windows might unzip the file for you.)

On macOS, double-click the .pkg file to start the installer.

On Windows, double-click the resulting .exe file to start the installer.

Follow the on-screen instructions.

Once installed successfully, close the installer window.

 Navigate to the following folder:

On macOS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-ins/CC/File Formats

On Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC\File Formats

Copy the Camera Raw plug-in (just the .8bi file) from the CC > File Formats folder that is mentioned in the above step.

Navigate to the following folder:

On macOS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-ins/Elements<Version Number>/File Formats

On Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements<Version Number>\File Formats

Replace the existing Camera Raw plugin in Elements<Version Number> folder with the plug-in that you copied earlier.

Prior to PSE 2024 PSE used a version numbering system that made the actual version number “2 OFF” from the Product name.  FOR EXAMPLE:  pse 2021 was version 19:  pse 2022 was version 20, and pse 2023 was version 21.  THERE IS NO VERSION 22 OR 23.

BEGINNING WITH PSE 2024 THE INSTALLED FILES MATCH UP WITH THE PRODUCT NAME.   Version 24 is PSE 2024.   I expect PSE 2025 to be version 25.

Below is where I manually installed version 16.0 of ACR on my windows computer after using the above instructions on my computer- yours should be in the same location if you used the default settings when installing the program

Glenn8675309_0-1716132594235.png

Depending upon how many versions of PSE you have installed the contents of this view may be, probably will be, different for you.  This is just the view on my computer.

Glenn8675309_1-1716132594239.png

You will notice I have a directory called “CC”- That is where the latest version of ACR is installed.   As of this document date (April 6th 2024) The latest version of ACR version 16.2.1.1767.

ACR is generally backwards compatible.  So I don't think it has anything to do with how old the camera is.   The latest update of Elements 2024 has caused a number of problems and this may be one of them.  But before we jump to that conclusion, we need to make sure that you have properly installed the Camera Raw plug-in.  The .bi file that Glenn talks about is a file named Camera Raw.8bi.  I have previously linked you to Glenn's post and your response was that you couldn't find the folder that it is supposed to be copied in.  My reply, which you may have missed, is that if the file doesn't exist, you create it as a new folder in the designated location.  You then copy the Camera Raw.8bi file into that folder.

Thanks to you both.  That file does not exist.  I am able to get into the camera raw log. it is small and I can share it with you if you are interested. It seems to me there was an initial contact but then camera raw config disabled the contact.  I plan to call Adobe tomorrow to see if someone there can help.

Correction, Jeff.   I was in the wrong area. There IS a Plug-ins folder showing CC/File Formats/Camera Raw.plugin, created 2/14/24, verion 16.2 (1763).  There is also a "last opened" section showing only --.  Does this help in any way?
