Coloring a PNG File

Hi.  I have a PNG file that the color is b&w.  I'm trying to change color of the PNG.  Any time I try and change color, it just makes it default to gray??

 

I've also tried Edit>Fill Layer>Choose Color

 

and I get the same result - gray color box/

 

Appreciate the help!!!

In Editor, go to Image menu>mode and check RGB color.

Are you attempting to colorize an object?
