Elements 11/18 on iMac

Feb 28, 2018 Feb 28, 2018

When I bought a new iMac  Retina OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 in late 2015 and transferred my Elements 11 from the old Mac, Elements Organiser no longer worked as smoothly as it had done on the old Mac. Also when I connected my Canon EOS 600 camera to the computer Elements Organiser could find no device so I use Canon software to transfer my images to Picture files and from there to the Elements organiser. Today I also found a problem with the editor: when I use the selection brush and then open an adjustment layer to give a mask, instead of my adjustments (changing the brightness) affecting the selected area the outline of the selected area becomes brighter or darker. This happens on photos taken with the Canon camera not with ones taken on my iPhone or my Canon G10.

Today I installed a free trial version of Elements 18. The organiser still cannot find my Canon camera when I connect it to the computer and I have just the same problem with the editor. I have not checked other aspects of the organiser as I have not done a back up of my Elements 11 organiser files.

Is Elements compatible with new Macs? What can I do?

How did you "transfer" it?

If you migrated it, migrating Adobe applications doesn't work properly.  You need to do a proper installation.

If that is the case, you will need to completely uninstall all Adobe applications and run the Adobe Cleaner Tool:

Use the Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems

NOTE: if you uninstall the trial version, you will not be able to reinstall and use it as a trial.

Thank you very much.

I am actually not sure how I installed Elements on the new computer. As the new computer has no CD slot I was given an Adobe  number to phone and they gave me an online code.

I don't mind losing the free trial Elements 18 but I presume I will also loose all my tags, albums and ratings which I have put onto my Elements 11 organiser? This also is not a major problem as my photos are also fairly well organised in Pictures and my old photos are still in iPhoto which I downloaded from the history section of my Apps on the new computer. Infact on the old computer I only used the Editor of Elements. When I started using the organiser as well on the new computer it was obviously not working as it should - very jumpy when scrolling up and down through the photos in Media but I found using the ratings and tags wonderful.

I will follow your instructions to uninstall and then use the Adobe Cleaner Tool. I will let you know the result but there will be a delay while I check the edits I have done are saved into my picture folder.

Thanks again

I have just realised my original Elements 11 is still installed on the old Mac (now used by my husband). I sent the photo which I was trying to edit to his computer and had exactly the same problem with selection i.e. when adjusting brightness the outline not the selected area became bright. Also when trying to import photos the Organiser did not find my camera. Perhaps Elements 11 is now just too out of date for our Macs?

Next step - I will try following  your  instructions on old Mac hopefully can install free trial of Elements 8 on that.
