Thanks Greg. I tried this and it still failed to open my original or a new catalogue. I then noticed my PC had only 55GB of free disc space (out of 1tb) and was highlighted red warning. After I cleared some files to give 100GB of free disc space, and again followed your process, my orignal catalogue opened ok. Thank you for your help.

Press the Shift key while launching the Organizer.  That should open the Catalog Manager.  Create a new catalog and open it.  Does the Organizer open?  If it does, go to the Catalog Manager again, using File>Manage Catalogs.  Select your original catalog and run the Repair and Optimize buttons.  Allow the routines to complete, even if you get a message that no errors have been found.  Try opening the catalog.

BTW, unless you turned the feature off, you will have some auto catalog backup available to restore.
