Question

Elements Organizer Move vs Backup and Restore to transfer all Photo files

I'm using Elements 14, soon 15, and I added a new SSD to store my primary Photo directory.

All I want to do is move the file from one internal drive to another.

Is back up and restore really the best method, or only method?

Has anyone moved a large number of files, 50k to a new drive using the move command?

Thank you, Tim

I a few words:

- backup and restore is the best method in your case... more on this later.

- it's not the only method (move comand from the organizer or move from the Explorer/Finder followed by reconnect all).

- Yes I have used the 'move' command several times to move a 60k library. Also a good method, but...

The main reason it's the best method for you is that nobody would recommend such a move without a backup first. The second reason is that the backup and restore enables you to move the catalog folder at the same time.

The 'move' command takes about the same time as the backup procedure itself, you save the time of the restore. If you have already a backup, the 'move' command is adequate.

You have to be patient when moving the whole library, there is no progress bar.

The 'move' command is safe: I have got once a power failute at 90% of the process: no harm done, the process first copies files, then deletes original only when the transfer has been successful.

Contrary to the same process in Lightroom, the move command is safe, and moving outside of the organizer followed by reconnection is a bad idea. The reconnection is safe in easy in Lightroom, I guess it will be very akward with the organizer.

Thank you Michel for your ideas. Good to know that the Move feature did work with a very large catalog. I did not think about using the Reconnect feature. When I installed the new SSD the first thing I did was copy my Pictures directory with Explorer. I could have used reconnect.

I ended up deleting the Picture dir on the new drive, I backed it up in two other locations, and I used the back up and restore. I had doubts but it worked!

I did have to go to Edit/Preferences and change saved files location and Adobe camera download location.

Cheers
