Feathered vignette

Community Beginner ,

I thought I could do it because I had done it a few years ago but for some reason I am unable to do it. I have a black and white photo and using elliptical marquee tool I selected 'feather' under 'Select'. Then I inversed it and deleted the area around the photo but photograph remain with a very clear outline, not feathered with a soft edge at all. It makes no difference if the feather value was set at 1 or 24.

Hope you can help.

Thanks.

Hi

I would suggest you might not have hidden the layer underneath, perhaps?

I'm using PSE v14 and this is my method for Vignette -

Open image

Duplicate (Ctrl+J)

Hide Background layer

Switch to Marquee tool

Set feathering to 50px

Draw shape as appropriate

Ctrl+J to place selected area on new layer

Hide Layer 1 to see effect.

Save as png if wanting to place on another background

Does this help you?

  1. Open picture file
  2. Open a blank layer above the Background layer (Layer 1)
  3. Activate the the Elliptical marquee tool, and set feather to 35 px (+/-) - experiment. Drag out the Ellipse to embrace the object to be retained
  4. Fill the ellipse with black(Edit>fill selection)
  5. Duplicate the Background layer and drag it above the layer with the Ellipse (Layer 1)
  6. Group the Background copy layer and Layer 1 (CTRL+G)
  7. Turn off visibility of Background layer.
  8. Place a blank layer below Layer 1 (this will be layer 2) and fill with color.
