My method was to import the entire folder from the file explorer for a set of trip pictures and then to tag those I want to show as a selection of those photos in the album sequence and captioned as an easy way to access a selection from the album of pictures that were taken.

That can't work.

The custom sort order of an album is a list stored in the catalog only, just like a playlist for audio. Nothing is changed in the files themselves. If you reimport some files, there will be no change (the playlist is ignored) and you are back to the only sort options available in your explorer or browser.

You can create 'children' albums for an existing one:

You create a new empty album. You set the order of the parent album as you like (custom or other). Then you move all or part of the files in the parent album to the child album. That is considered as the 'album order' in that child album. Creating those children albums does not duplicate the media files, it only creates different lists for different uses.

If you want to 'import' again in a new catalog, or to sort the files for browsing in the explorer or finder, you'll have to rename your files with a starting text string plus an order number (easy in the organizer). That's good for keeping your album custom order to be used by an external tool like a slideshow maker.
