Help maintaining pixel contraints and file size requirements.

My wife and I have been twisting our brains over the weekend and need some help.

We are trying to size a photo for an art submission.  The photo starts as a TIFF and is saved as a JPG for submission.  The photo file size as a JPG is 6.5 meg - the first submission contraint.  The file size must be 5 meg or smaller.  The pixelwidth of the JPG is set at 1920 - the second size contraint. 

We have tried to reduce the file size by reducing the resolution.  The JPG being submitted is for review and printing.  We have reduced the file between 300 and 100.  When we reduce the resolution, the pixel width falls below the 1920 criteria.   We did notice that if we change the pixel width to 1920 and then reducde the resolution, the file size reflects the change.  As soon as we change the pixel width back to 1920, the file size changes back to 6.5 meg.

We are in need of assistance and you are free to make me feel like a fool.

Try this:

1. Open your picture file in Editor

2. Go to File menu>Save for web. In the dialog that opens, you can adjust the W or H to suit, just be sure that "Constrain Proportions" is checked. You can adjust the quality slider as needed in order to meet the file size constraint that is imposed for your submission.

3.Further, be sure to select JPEG file format for the output with appropriate compression quality.

You haven't given us all of the requirements for your submission.  For example, you haven't told us the length requirement.  Although we normally want sample photos to be inserted in the post, this may be one where we need to see the original TIFF attached to the post, using the upload box at the bottom of the reply editor:

 

If you don't want us to see your competition submission, then provide us with a similarly sized tiff file.
