Help with new Adobe Photoshop elements

Hello, I had an older version of the APE and just purchased thi one so that I could open those old files, but its not allowing me to access the layers to update my proo. Any suggestions before I have to completly start over. I am a novice. Thank you!!

You have probably opened the Editor in the default Quick mode which cannot handle layers.  You need to switch to Expert mode.
